What are you the mafia? You've just turned a civil dispute into a legal case by making physical threats against him. You could always take him to a small claims court, trying to take the law into your own hands won't get you very far.

How did you guys agree on the details? email? that might work as proof...handshake? You can still take him to court, no judge would think you work for free, the issue will be proving the agreed upon amount. A contract exists so terms of the agreement can be proven. A verbal contract is still a contract, proving it is the problem. Sue his ass....
