If you stop link building dont you think Google would think its weird?

For instance lets say you where steadily building links for a website, and as soon as the update comes out it takes a nose dive.

I think we should just post better content, with less keyword density, and lower the amount of On/Page SEO.

Same as 2011. Link diversity. the main thing. If you want to earn money then you need off page. and if you want steady income then you really need Content + off page.
So off page is common. and Link building is the hart of Off page. I just follow the basic things like doing each and every kind of link building techniques. and it definitely helps. Because most of my sites are at the same position after the update.

This is something that has me a little worried these days. I've been reading about it in some blogs and even about doing case studies on negative seo... many agree that G is opening the doors even more to those practices now.
What do you people think about that?

I'm a noob trying to rank a couple of sites for the first time, so I'm not too worried about competitors trying to destroy my great rankings yet... but I don't want to let this uncertainty stop me from taking action because of fear...
