Official Ubuntu/Linux Users of BHW

I thought it might be cool for everyone here who uses ubuntu/linux OS to have a thread where they can talk about things windows users wouldn't understand? So like our own little linux using club inside BHW.

What do you guys thinks?

Considering we use different tools and etc. for our daily IM ventures than others.

Feel free to discuss what linux only IM tools you use as well!

P.S. post your current linux os or your favorite
I would like to make a top 5 list of the top linux os that you guys recommend/use

I would probably do away with my windows installation if it were not for my games. Other then that ubuntu is super fast and reliable.

Ya ubuntu rocks. Did you know you can run it on a usb stick over your current windows os. It can be a plug n play os.

I feel ya on the games thing too. One nice aspect tho is when your on linux your only option is to work and be productive haha without the temptation of games. Thats why I keep my rift, and warhammer on my gfs pc

While Ubuntu is good, it isn't the end all of the linux world. There are far better distributions once you get more comfortable with Linux.

I for one have abandoned my development on Ubuntu after the changes they've been making during the last few releases. Even with the UI, I would have even preferred Gnome-shell over Unity, and I don't even like Gnome-shell.

Usability my ass. Though, that is just my opinion, of course. I'd be using linux all the time if it weren't for all the IM programs I have that just don't work through WINE.

Yes I used that today. Customer's computer was jacked up and would not boot. So loaded ubuntu and snatched off all their important files before reinstalling windows. Extra 60 bucks =]

I just did that the other day for a client.

Thats why this thread is about all linux disrtbs. And yes you are right there are many of different os to fit the individuality needs of that person.

fit the individuality needs of that person.

I remember when Ubuntu had that philosophy. Then 11.04-11.10 happened. T_T

I preferred it when I was able to change everything I wanted without restriction. I wouldn't even mind them setting Unity as the default if I could strip it out easily without any issues and remove half of the bloat it comes with - though that is not the case.

At the moment I've using my own mashup based off of the unstable debian branch.

With normal distros: I'd have to say Fedora, heavily modified Ubuntu 10.10, or Arch-current.

i use ubuntu for everything, except for listening to music and watching movies, for which i use winodws :D

Cool beans. I used fedora for awhile but I recently switched to xubuntu which is giving me some problems. Tried mint as well a while back but it was just full of bugs.

I use fedora for pretty much everything and my mac for things that linux doesn't support.

I understand your frustration with xubuntu. Though I do use it for one of my less powerful desktops without much issue at all actually.

My favorite choice is CentOS...:)
Thats usually my choice when setting up a linux server + NginX.
