The problem is that not everyone can afford/want to move on.
I have been removing penalties from websites a year ago as a trade - having huge customers (6 figures a month sites that got de-indexed) - some companies/people simply cant afford to loose theirs only income source.

When you have a site that is making $30,000-100,000/yr is not that easy to just let it go. Especially since you maybe invested months or years into growing it.

Personally I think Google should be legally obligated to at least tell you exactly why they penalized it so you can fix it. I would say most of the sites that got hit are not blackhat sites but sites of people who just accidentally did something wrong. Or even quality sites that got killed because the bastards at Google are morons. As a matter of fact, I find it easier to keep blackhat sites safe than whitehat ones simply because I keep them from ranking for too big keywords and I just emphasize on many longtail keywords. That way they don't stick out so they keep flying under the radar.

There are people with millions of pages indexed in google, all of them junk, but they fly under the radar. If you don't believe me search for the story about the guy who indexed 6 billion pages in google and the guy who indexed 2 billion pages. Both used subdomains but that was a long time ago when that worked. Now it doesn't. But other things still work. There are people who literally bought mansions and retired after spamming Google for a couple of months.

Hi ExtraWinner, thanks for the useful info... currently this issue is very, very actual. Will appreciate your thoughts.

I would refer my situation to (But not at least)...

A) Did you got some private blog network backlinks?

If you see a penalty some time after you got some private blog network post backlinks - even some long months later - it could meant that blog network got de-indexed (check your reports and forums for any comments about de-indexing networks).

Penalty recognition:

- sudden drop in rankings without any reason (sometimes it could be 3-5 spots, sometimes 100-200 spots)

I will start with a single example, because all my sites got hit. I was using almost the same backlink building strategy and all of them were added in the same Analytics / Webmaster accounts, so I just don't know why all of them are hit...

One of my sites was ranking on a lot keywords in auto insurance niche, 250+ pages of the highest quality content, each page was at least 700 words, time on site was more than 4 minutes, page/visit more than 3. People loved it...

As of backlink building, I was using article directories (Many of them) and blog networks heavily besides quality comments, web 2.0 link building, backlinking backlinks with xrumer, social bookmarks, authority websites, guest posts, high quality web directories...

On about 5th of Feb I lost #1-5 position rankings for ALL main keywords (including LSI). No longtails were hit AT ALL... 3-4 days after I totally lost all rankings including longtails. Instead of pages which were ranked on the keywords, I was seeing my other pages (which included the term) on #50-100 positions. The pages which were ranking on those keywords just disappeared from SERPs. Now I only rank on my exact domain keyword...

As of now, here is what I'm thinking about the reasons:

1. No brand linking (I should not have over used anchor texts, even click here is natural)
2. Over using spun content (as more as you use it, it gets less unique and easily trackable)
3. Over using blog networks... I checked about 50 of my 2-3 month old backlinks, all the homepage PR is 0, they lost it... some of them are deindexed.
4. In general, over using low quality link sources.

I feel i have a penalty because of all above. The links still stay the strongest indicator.

Do you think that getting medium / high quality backlinks will really help? Or I just should 301 websites to the new domains and move content?

Regarding the private blog network case, I can talk a little bit of my recent experience:

- First the site lost a lot of rankings and some even felt of top 100, at the same time, when the blog networks got deindexed.

- After that, I continued to build some better links and bought also 3 high pr links from related authority domains in my niche. Costly (monthly payment), but worth it.

- Further, 2 providers also re-did the blog network links recently

- Meanwhile, I had new links from new web 2.0 blogs with good spun content and high pr links from manual blog commenting comming in every day.

<-- THIS all gave the site his old rankings back and some improved even quite good.
Conclusion for me is, to not use bad, sold blog networks to the public with bad spun content anymore.

But what I very often see at other site's is, that they do mistakes from step 1 ( bad anchor variation etc. )

Does pinging the site really help speed up the dance process? Would linklicious/lindexed do the job or do you recommend pingomatic?

My question may sound silly but doesn't BHW have much more than 3 ad slots but it's still very highly ranked on google, many other examples can be given too. So isn't this supposed to mean that the number of ad slots doesn't affect Pagerank?
