I realize this might be tough to answer since there are different ways to market on the Internet using different tools but here goes. If you had to start all over again, given the knowledge that you currently have, what is the one tool you'd start with, e.g, SENuke, Tweetattack, etc. and why.

Or...would you go to Fiverr and pay for services until you had enough money to buy your own tools?

I guess the one thing I'm trying to achieve is to generate traffic since that's the primary key to making money online. I know the question seems overly broad but I'm also asking in hopes that newbies will see that they don't have to spend a ton of money to make money online and that if they started with just one tool, they can get started and be successful.

As I already own a headset and Dragon Naturally Speaking 11, that would be a start up cost of zero.

If I wanted to get something cheap but effective for many different things - I'd get scrapebox and 25 private proxies.
Maybe pay a few bucks to have Blogger host my own domain name (about $9) so they would let me post whatever I wanted (which they seem to do if it's your own domain name)
If I wasn't making $100 a week after 4 weeks I'm either dead or doing something very wrong.

I can second that, I've been doing linkbuilding 100% manual cause I'm too cheap to buy any software and I just got a free account and it works just like described. Try the free version and you'll see.

This is the #1 thing on my list of things to buy once I have some extra money.

That is a pretty open-ended question, perhaps intentionally so, personally I would invest in ScrapeBox and a lot of researching, action, evaluating, and then refining.

ScrapeBox because it does so much for such a reasonable price. I have a number of other tools and services that are very valuable to me, but SB would be my starting point. Then learning, taking action and looking at the results of said action; there are "tool collectors" who buy or acquire any and every tool, e-book, and other thing they can but just leave them laying on the shelf collecting dust, or use them blindly without looking at their results. You'll not get very far with either of those routes.

Traffic is there, all you have to do is capture it and as Scritty posted all the tools one needs to start with are free.

Good sources of traffic:
- SERPs
- fb
- youtube
- email lists
- targeted ads (ad swaps, banners, PPC, niche forums, etc.)
- twitter
- other paid networks

* It's not the tools that creates the success or allows you to be successful. However that is a common failed frame of thinking.
You are right in that one doesn't need to spend money on tools to get started or to be successful. Just keep focused on a couple traffic sources and work at picking up that traffic and monetizing it. When you're ready for your new tool you will know what you need!

Wtf is up with everyone pushing linklicious? One dude even has a competitors banner (lindexed) in his signature who is recommending linklicious as the tool to start with? I hope you know that you don't need to start out with a link crawling/indexing service and this is simply bad advice based on your OP.

don't really see the point of linkliscious as IMHO it's more for getting backlinks indexed than it is really making any backlinks..... for what you can make by hand you can just dump a load of URL's into an RSS feed to get them seen.... can't see how a backlink indexing tool shouldn't be necessary until you're making backlinks on a major (i.e. automated) scale....

He ask what one software you would use , not
wheter you think a newbie would need it . And

I would use tweet attacks . Because for one it automates
alot of things you would have to do manually .

Second you can convert that twitter traffic into
paying customers if you handle the traffic right .

But that's with any traffic source .
