So I have tried various black hat methods in the past, but it has been the first time that I have had an experience like this. Recently, I've been using the password torrent method, promising downloaders the password if they complete a CPA offer. Apparently I pissed someone off, because they did a whois search on the domain I hosted the offer on, and called me this morning with quote "stop fucking with people before you get a bullet in your head". I'm guessing the person is a 40ish year old guy with some New Yorker accent. Needless to say, I bought whois privacy for that domain soon after.

My question is, what should I do now? Just ignore this threat and continue on with black hat methods? Or take heed of this threat as a possible danger? Thanks.

do you live near New York? If not dont worry about it :)
If you do you better change your name, grow a beard and move to mexico :)

I would not worry about it, might be someone you knwo fuqin with you

I would imagine the guy will just go away. I think the important lesson to be learned though, is to get whois privacy protect ON EVERY DOMAIN you own. You really don't want your personal info out there at all...

This is too true, lesson learned for sure. For all future blackhat projects I will definitely be buying private registration.

I am also sure that he found my information by whois, because he called me the formal name I only put for serious sign ups and etc.

However, I don't want it to end up being one of the cases on the news where the guy says "well, I never actually thought anything would happen...". Unfortunately, with my real address from the whois it would be so easy for someone to google earth it and whatnot.

Still a little shaken up -.-

ooooooooooh!

OMG!

This is really scary.

Whatever I do with my domains even WH, I ALWAYS use whois protection - actually I am with namecheap and paid with a entropay virtual visa card so that no nasty thing can happen - an additional level of protection.

I therefore have no experience with that. But... revenge has different means - not only a bullet and if the domain is not the base of your existence... If I were you I would drop it.

always use namecheap for blackhat stuff because they provide a whois guard free

Just want to mention what can happen in my country somewhere in Europe, just a little example...

If I want to f*ck sb I could easily subscribe your name to different paying sites - you would get bills without end and would due to the here very questionable law have so many problems, don't know how the situation is in US.

I would alternatively think about putting something on the page to calm down the angry guys if they recheck your page. I would do all I can - in my country this is not at all paranoid but very senseful.

some1 posted that fake details dynadot regitering , that would work too imo :) good plan tho i have been too tight with money and have not bought it :P

But i think no one in here will come do anything. Even if they come ill make them some coffee and we can discuss about it. If thats no help its their broplem

You mean you can signup people to paysites with just their name and address? How does that work? Sounds interesting.

1. Go online and research "Limited Liability Company". Form one. Business expense.

2. Retain an attorney in state where LLC formed to act as Agent for Service of Process. Business expense.

3. Register new domains under LLC name using attorney as agent for info. DO NOT transfer any old domains to LLC, (history is available).

4. Transfer files from old domains to new domains.

5. Sell old domains (do what you can to monetize them first.)

If anyone can contact you through that haze, good luck! :)

The only problem is, even if I change all my info, he did call me based on the WHOIS search, so he still probably has all that initial information, and of course, my cell number. However, the more I think about it, the least likely it seems that he would be serious, but then again, guess you never know.

Thanks for all the suggestions to hide my info.

That's messed up. It amazes me that someone would get that worked up over a torrent they couldn't access (assuming they didn't want to do the CPA offer). Maybe he was pissed because he spent a week downloading (56K die!) and then couldn't open it. Folks get mad when they can't get their porn. :D

That sucks but reminds me of a time when we didn't hide our info on whois and we were contacted by someone who was pissed off at us for some reason or another.

It is scary.

So I guess there is a question here regarding the posing of an address when selling things on ClickBank etc.

If I were to create a business, etc and use my real address in my emails and contact information what could happen? Couldn't some guy/girl get really pissed off about lossing money/ebook sucks/etc and track me down?

Has this happened to anyone before?

Most likely it is because he DID do the cpa offer, but didn't get the password like promised.

But really, I'm more of the bad guy here since I manipulated him to do the offer, and he probably now is suffering the end results of signing up (was a cell phone subscription offer).

I think I'll have to rethink my morals, maybe this is like a wake up call that black hatting is not for me

First make your whois info private which is worth a few bucks a year, then carry on about your business.

Hey guys, I'm really new here and have been called and threatened many times. I remember one incident a few years ago when I created Line Flyer from the game Line Rider. Line Rider was a dude on a sled and I basically re-tooled the game so the character rode a motorcycle and added a few features Line Rider fans were demanding. I eventually got a call from Brian Fargo (wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Fargo) who basically bought the Line Rider copyright and wanted to eliminate all competition ASAP. His phone call was quite funny. He Claimed he was calling as a courtesy before flying along with lawyers to my hometown for a lawsuit. I was young and intimidated and offed my domain name, source code and anything tying me to the game very quickly. I won't say how or who I bounced the source to but I still came out ahead by charging the buyer a monthly fee for the domain traffic and game. It was a scary scenario and a bit disappointing to drop a 8k$/month monetized domain. Ever since I've been very careful about private registration and doing my work through other companies rather than giving CEO's a reason to place a bullseye on my head.

Good Luck all and I'm happy to have found this awesome forum!

Ignore it. I got calls all the time when I promoted on CL, i hung up on all of them. One guy pretended to be a cop from Texas. I asked his badge number and he hung up.

Just curious, and I don't want to hi-jack this thread, but how many people here actually run their online money-making activities as a business and not as a hobby??

There are a lot of tax advantages to actually operating it as a business, not to mention that it gives you greater credibility and "gravitas".

Would love to hear what you think! :)

Errrr... if you don't live near that person then you shouldnt be worry. If you are then if ever a guy walks up to you and ask if you're you then just say you're not ahahaha... nahh don't worry about this guy.. he must have some kind of bad day...

Perhaps if the next times he calls, try to cool him down or make him laugh... hope he doesnt get angrier though :P
