Clarification:

For some reason some people think this involves calling people or that they are calling your personal number.

Heres how it works:

A company pays YOU to get people to call THEM. So they give you a custom number so they can track your leads. The user calls the number and it goes to the companies customer service.

Yes a lot of advertisers (the ones I deal with) do not allow it and the number has to be called directly. It can't be forwarded or transferred. Even if you do get away with this there is an another problem. A lot of people will immediately say 'I saw your ad on Craigslist' - which could immediately flag you. Although, you might be able to do this for a while and make a buck here and there. There are successful ways to do this and this isn't one of them.

interesting method , I do wonder if these companies wont notice that all calls come in through a forwarded number ? Not sure how trackable it is for them.

You could also try this with PPC. I dont know if it is against the TOS but you could try putting your number in the PPC Ad, that way they just call the number and you spend minimal amounts of clicks.

what about servicenumbers? here in germany a voice tells the caller "2,99 euro/minute" with servicenumbers. you get 2,1€ per minute from them. BUT you can chose what you want to say on phone or just play a tape..

method:
print businesscards "free phonesex! call NUMBER" and put them all around clubs. how many drunken bastards will call your number

I talked to my affiliate manager, and she said most people either use search PPC directly on the ads or display buys. Both are legitimate and stable sources that won't get you banned. Here's what's awesome about running legit vs posting classifieds: Your payouts will get steady bumps, and after testing and tracking, your conversions will rise, while your CPC's drop as your adwords campaigns age.
