Penalty for using the same backlink text?

I'm starting to think there may be a penalty for using the same back link text. I'm reading different sources and seeing more and more info about making things look natural.

I tried this, as I was using the same text for all my links, and I noticed a bigger jump in rankings after a week or two than I had before. This was the only thing I changed.

Best way is to get a mix of 50% primary keyword, 40% other related keywords, and 10% of "this blog", "click here" and url links.

Personally I vary my anchor text like this:

50% exact keyword
40% long-tail/relevant keywords
10% generic (click here, this site, this blog)

Definitely, I noticed it as well. You definitely need some exact keyword, some including keyword and some alternative text. Percentages I don't know.

Anchor text diversity is definitely key. I like to optimize over 100+ keywords at a time and also like to ad the domain and name of the business a lot in the anchor text.

That might explain some problems lately.

Suppose this sort of thing is about the balance. 100% one keyword looks dodgy, but with under 50% it might not give good results.

If you look at any non-seo'd site it's likely that a great deal of their backlinks are the domain/url itself. Eg on forums (esp non tech forums), the average user is likely to just copy and paste the url or type out the domain which then automatically become hyperlinked.

So I'm a big believed in having a good proportion of anchors the domain/url itself.

This is one of the reasons why Exact Match Domains (even KW domains in general) rank so well. By using the domain as the anchor you still increase diversity but still get the power of the keywords coming through. There are a fair few different links you can use too:

http://keyworddomain.com
http://www.keyworddomain.com
http://keyworddomain.com/
http://www.keyworddomain.com/

The other big bonus, for EMDs, is you can use the ideal anchor text 'keyword domain' more liberally than otherwise as it makes absolute sense to Google as the domain name is often the title of the site or name of the company.

So, yet another reason to focus your efforts on a KW-rich domain!

just be random in the percentage (only keeping in mind to use the main keyword at least 50% of the time).

I think it applies to all links. However, if your blasting a buffer site, I wouldn't think it would matter as much, but personally with my findings and everyone else chiming in, I think it's beneficial to still vary them.
