Because I've just passed my bike test ... I'm going to drop it or come off it at some point during the first 6 months so rather than have to replace parts on the 2011 model, I'd go with a second hand model to begin with.

That's wise. Are you young? Inexperienced?

I would recommend keeping the used bike for a year or even more. You should PLAN on at least dumping it, if not having a serious accident. Wear all the safety gear (long pants, boots, gloves, helmet). I had a bike in my early 20's and I'm lucky to be alive today. 2 guys that I knew did not survive.

Not only are you your biggest threat (taking risks, exploring the limits of the bike and your abilities), but also cars cannot see you and will kill you with no warning or reason. I can still vividly remember a few near-misses where some retard in a car almost punched my ticket. And also those times when I was stupid and almost killed myself.

My point is that there are varying levels of risk, and varying levels of stupidity. It's a real good idea to keep this in mind. A bike is very unforgiving. Sometimes it's "strike one, and you are OUT".

On a side note, I honestly cant believe these things are legal to ride on public roads. I mean our society is so overly safety conscious. I mean if they allow these things on the road then there should be no seat belt law lol. I'd much rather be in a car wreck with no seat belt than be in a wreck on a motorcycle. With that in mind I'd love to have a motorcycle if I wasn't so scared I'd get killed.

I don't get your idea. Ain't it your own thing if you want to drive motorcycle 200km/h 100mph into wall ? Last time i checked i am not slave of govt even if they want me to be....

My experience has been that there is no 6-month time frame for dropping the bike or getting into a major accident.

In fact, just last week my uncle wiped out the Katana I sold him (the same one that he sold me just a year before), and he has been riding motorcycles for over 40 years.

Definitely wear ALL the gear. Last year a neighbor of his hit a gravel patch going over 65 MPH and he was wearing shorts. Needless to say his leg was caught under the bike and his road rash was so bad that the surgeon had to cut off his leg at the knee.
