How Many Articles Are Needed for Topical Authority?

There’s no fixed number focus on complete coverage, not just 10 or 20 posts. A good setup is 1 pillar page + 10–30 supporting articles with a mix of informational, comparison, and FAQ content, all internally linked to show strong topical relevance.

I often hear that building topical authority is important for ranking in Google today. However, I’m still confused about how much content is actually required to establish authority around a topic. For example, if I target one main keyword or topic cluster, how many supporting articles should I realistically publish? Should it be 10, 20, or even more supporting posts? Also, should these articles be informational, comparison based, or mixed types of content? From your SEO experience, what structure works best to signal strong topical relevance to Google?
There’s no fixed number like 10 or 20 — it depends on how big the topic is.

What works better is covering the topic fully. Start with a main pillar page, then add supporting articles that answer related questions and subtopics.

A mix of informational + comparison content works best. Focus on depth and relevance, not just hitting a number.

That’s what usually builds real topical authority.

It depends on quality contents. not a lot of contents. So you should create quality contents for best SEO results. Long and not ai contents are usefull for best SEO

there is no fixed number of articles for topical authority, it depends more on how deeply you cover the topic.

building a solid cluster of around 15–30 well connected and in-depth posts usually helps establish strong topical authority over time.

The truth is not counting total number of articles required but what matter more to me is depth of the topic.
If you are targeting for short topics like mechanical keyboards for coding then i think 12 articles are enough.
However if you are choosing a wide niche for example digital marketing, then even 40 articles would be low.
Whenever any search intent related to that topic you have articles related to it on your website, likely get tropical authority

type of content
To show google you are expert you should focus on all type of mixed content.

For a content cluster these things are important
Pillar Page
One overview page covering all overview about the topics.
Information post
How to, what to, where i have to these type of posts which solve the problem
Comparison.
Google always like comparison like tools difference so google can better understand its value.
The most important thing is choosing one subniche targeted to your topic
Today it is difficult to get ranks jack of all trades master of none.
My wisdom of wording is instead of choosing 5 small topics cater all your aricles to any one topic. This will get tropical authority

Interlinking
You can always link your inner post urls so google will better your site structure more wisely

Its not about quantity its about topical depth You need to cover all subtopics, user intent, and related questions. A small niche might need 20–30 articles but bigger SaaS or SEO niches can easily require 100+
When you need to cover all these subtopics, user intent and questions in topical depth , then you have a chunky big quantity of pillar library, which is not possible to write with AI, or the other way aorund; yes you can write it with help of AI ,then for a big pillar library you need months to finish it.

Whereas big media newspaper sites, big sites who dominate google seo global, they have money, they have a team and they have AI models far beyond than cluade, gemini or chatgpt to build a big pillar library the fast way.

And most website visitors not read long form chunky pillar pages.

There isn’t a fixed number anyone who gives you publish 50 articles as a rule is guessing. Topical authority isn’t about volume; it’s about coverage and depth. That said, there are realistic ranges that tend to work.

Broad niches like health require thousands of posts to cover all keywords in the topic. Micro-niches usually gain authority with 10-20 extremely targeted posts. For regular niches, 5-6 pillar posts, each with 10-20 posts is enough. You need to do niche research to identify these things.

There is no fixed number of posts , it depends on the topic depth. A mix of informational and comparison content works best. Cover the topic well instead of chasing a number , and keep everything connected.

I don't know if this is the right approach, but let me give you an example from my last project.

Let us say that you're building a Nintendo Switch Affiliate Site.

In order to get the topical authority, you would need to cover the majority of the keyword volume, which is around 200 articles.

From "best SD Cards" to controllers, headphones, cases, screen protectors and similar.

The only trick is to do this in a way that the user finds it valuable.

For most topics, start with around 5 to 10 strong supporting articles and expand later if needed.

There is no fixed number and focus on full topic coverage, not article count. Start with 10–20 high-quality supporting posts, mix informational and comparison content, and interlink them well. Depth, relevance, and consistency matter more than quantity for building strong topical authority.

There is no set number some sites gain topical authority with 20–50 strong articles, others need more, depending on how broad and competitive the topic is.

Why should google prioritize websites with a big pillar page library / give them more seo authorithy, when the majority of website visitors not read long chunky pillar pages?

As a beginner, focus less on exact numbers and more on covering the topic fully. Start with 10-20 quality articles around one topic. Mix informational, guides, and comparisons. Interlink them properly and keep content helpful. Topical authority comes from depth, consistency, and relevance not just publishing a specific number of posts.

There isn’t a fixed number, it depends more on how well you cover the topic. In many cases, having one main page supported by 10–20 well-structured articles can be a good starting point.

What matters more is depth, relevance, and how well the content connects together. A mix of informational and related subtopics usually works better than focusing on just one type.

Building authority is more about covering a topic completely over time rather than hitting a specific number.

quantity is not important. try to write one good post. and get many traffic. that's all.
