Decided to cook something fancy. Recipe said: “Simple, 30 minutes.”

Three hours later:

Smoke alarm screaming
Pasta stuck to the ceiling
Sauce somehow turned into lava
Me, googling “how to clean burnt pan without crying”

Conclusion: I’m better at ordering food than pretending to be Gordon Ramsay. :)

Who else has a “kitchen disaster” story that made them rethink life?

I had a big ego years ago about cooking when managing a restaurant. I told customers that I can make anything. Some days they would request things that reminded them of their Grandma. And I would make them successfully as a challenge.

But hushpuppies is what got me one day. Tasted very bad, and I had to admit that I was not a master chef. This is NOT a picture of mine!

Due to that, I'm actually a good Chef :D A Master Chef :cool:

On a serious note, I miserably failed many times, but I noted and learned. Now, when I cook, what I cook, it's tasty and brilliant.

For the history: One of my secrets is, when I cook, I ALWAYS put the good thought inside - I never cook with angry, or with bad thoughts inside my mind, but always with good emotions. The food is tasty and healthy.

i have this habit of not tasting my own food and only having one when im serving to others.
For a while I got praise for desserts and pasteries, so I served the family lemon bars, im not sure what measurement i convereted incorrectly but they were bitter and sour; irony is I was only serving arabic coffee to balance and wash down the sweetness .

Thank you for letting me live in the 21st century and be able to order food :anyway:
Thanks very much
Honestly, modern food delivery deserves more respect. Without it, some of us would not survive our own kitchens :D

That’s a humbling moment for sure :D Even the best cooks have that one dish that keeps them grounded. Hushpuppies really do have a way of exposing confidence. Respect for owning it though. Anyone who’s cooked seriously knows that lesson sticks.

That’s how it goes :D
A few failures humble you, then the skills stick. And cooking in a good mood really does make a difference. Respect to a real Master Chef :)
I've definitely been there! Rice boiling over the pot was my latest kitchen disaster. Now I just order pizza!
Rice is a sneaky one :D One second it’s fine, next second it’s a mess. Pizza is the safest backup plan.

That’s a brave habit :D
Lemon desserts are unforgiving. One small measurement off and they turn into a science experiment. Serving Arabic coffee to balance the “sweetness” makes the story even better. At least the lesson sticks. :)

When I started living alone, I wasn't a very good cook, but I wasn't a very picky eater either, so most of the stuff that I managed to scrape together, I also managed to eat. But I've failed many times, including soups turning into jelly, slimy pasta with zero flavor and cookies having to be soaked in milk for 20 minutes before you bite into them at all. But nothing went into the trashcan, I ate absolutely all of it unless it was charred.

Sounds like a true disaster, lol! Well, I'm a good cook, tbh. I worked at a few restaurants back in the day and learned a lot of tricks and recipes. I'm making good food! But usually follows some recipe from the internet and adds or changes things to my taste :)

Kitchen disaster is common to man.
Absolutely. Kitchen disasters are a universal experience. If you cook long enough, you’re guaranteed a few memorable failures along the way :D
I often cook noodles, and while I'm cooking, I usually go and make a side dish. Sometimes I come back and the noodles are burnt black, leaving only a burnt pan.
That happens to the best of us :D Noodles demand full attention. Look away for one side dish and they turn into charcoal. Consider it a reminder that multitasking in the kitchen is a risky sport.

That’s honestly the real survival phase of cooking :D You learn fast when you’re both the chef and the customer. If it’s not burned, it’s edible. Respect for powering through every experiment and wasting nothing.

That’s the best kind of cook, honestly :D Solid basics, real experience, and enough confidence to tweak recipes instead of following them blindly. That’s usually when the food turns out great.

I can totally relate to the burnt noodle experience, rula_shaun. It's like they have a mind of their own and can go from perfectly cooked to charred in a matter of seconds. Builder Dave, your story is hilarious and I'm impressed that you ate everything you made, even if it didn't turn out as planned. It's great that you didn't give up and kept experimenting until you found your cooking groove. What's your favorite dish to cook now, and do you have any go-to recipes that you've perfected over time?

I’ve definitely set of the smoke alarm a few times. Also I remember once I was doing a stir fry and I put too many chilli's in and the whole house was filled with chilli smoke!

for real, I'm glad that we have opportunity to order any kind of food home
For real. Food delivery is a blessing. Some days it saves time, some days it saves dinner, and some days it just saves the kitchen :D

Haha, noodles really do turn on you the moment you look away :D And yeah, the early days were pure survival cooking. Failing a lot but still eating it all definitely builds character. These days I keep it simple and stick to a few dishes I’ve dialed in. Nothing fancy, just stuff I know will turn out right and keep everyone happy.
As long as it's not this....

Exactly :D As long as it doesn’t look like that, I’d still give it a chance. Some kitchen mistakes are forgivable. That one… maybe not so much.

Oh yeah, that’ll do it :D Too many chilies turn a stir fry into tear gas real fast. At least it’s a mistake you only make once… hopefully.
