I recently went through all the pages of my blog and cleared out over a thousand spam messages in the comment section. My question, do legitimate comments actually help your SEO rankings? Is there any benefit to putting resources and intention into getting people to make comments and engage on the website?

Legit comments don’t directly improve rankings, but they do help in a few ways:

Very careful before creating blog comment link, previously i bought blog comment package, then after few days my site goes down. Don't create high OBL blog comment link.
Only create niche related low obl blog comment link which is very helpful.

You have to see how good comments are you getting but actually it depends on niche. Like if you provide financial articles, there can be comments from people asking after giving their personal situation. They write in detail so all that content can also rank. But if you are getting mostly useless comments, a lot of time will be wasted in moderating them . Close the comments section in that scenario.

The easiest fix is setting comment links to nofollow/ugc and moderating. Most of the time I just trash spam comments, but every now and then I’ll strip out their junk link (and replace it with a link to one of my sites ), tweak the text a bit, and let it ride. Comments themselves don’t directly boost rankings but they can help indirectly. Fresh content, user engagement, and longer dwell time send positive signals. plus legit comments sometimes add keyword rich context. worth encouraging, but don’t expect magic Seo gains just from them.

Blog comments are useless. Users leave blog comments with spam content, they just need backlink.

Comments are not helpful for rank, But legitimate comments actually help to identify your site
as legitimate site and user trust the site, hence they coming back frequently. If you have active community in your site and they frequently discuss that is good factors. But forget about WP comments which are automated are useless, You can add h-captcha or reCAPTCHA so you will get comment from real people.

at some point (4-5 years ago?) they were considered content by google, so if your site had short articles, generally speaking, getting legitimate comments would add to your existing content which could increase rankings. But I'm not sure whether this is still a thing nowadays...

of course! More engagement = more time on site = better rankings.

Besides, even if having comments on your site didn't influence rankings, I would still leave them on since I do read (and get influenced in my opinions) by other people's comments frequently on the sites that I visit.

So, in what concerns me, comments are a good thing. The problem - of course - is getting legitimate comments, as nowadays hardly anyone leaves a thoughtful, valuable comment anymore.
