Competitor backlinks question

Hey all

I have a list of my competitors top backlinks. Let say their domain is website.com and I have purchased the domain website.net
Would it be beneficial to contact the backlink provider and ask them to change the backlink Url to "our new domain" at website.net
Forcing them to loose the backlink. Later I would redirect website.net from a coming soon page to mysite.com

Im sure this is a common trick . But is it worth it? what are the risks google wise?

Why do you think the webmaster would be willing to change the link just because you said so?

It won't work, it's a waste of your time and the money used in buying said domain. Only time you'd have a chance is if your competitor's site is not reachable/dead.

The think is my niche is quite small and the backlinks I'm sure I could get them to change. Just wondering if it was possible to do so with out google backlash or anything like that. I mean if they all changed the backlinks to the new domain without issue. why not give it a shot?

I've had to change my own domain before and when reaching out to see if the link could be changed, Never had an issue or ownership request

Maybe go ahead, I don't think that specific actions would result in your site getting penalized by Google. Unless they suspect.

The goal anyway is to rank and bank.

I can't see this approach having a great strike rate, but you may be able to get a few % of links changed to your domain. I doubt the ROI will be worth it though.

Its not worth your time. I doubt they would even answer your email

Interesting angle , but doesn’t Google consider this kind of forced redirect manipulation risky? Have you seen anyone pull it off at scale without penalties? Curious if it’s worth the effort vs. just building fresh links.

I agree with your point of view. Many webmasters receive a large number of emails seeking links every day. They will not check such emails at all.

My experience is that if you want to do this, make sure the new domain has quality, relevant content, not just used as a coming soon page. The redirects should also be 301 to pass the link value properly. Also, diversify your sources and dont rely too much on this trick
