Today, I decided for this fairly new store that I have been working on, I was going to do the SEO myself. Not having much knowledge on it, I go to YouTube and look up how to optimize a Shopify store for search engine.

I learned about google keyword planner, and how to look up keywords. I learned how to target keywords and put them in your store, descriptions, headers, and alt text. I am currently learning about blog posts and how you should push at least one blog post out per month while targeting a certain number of keywords, maybe 3-6? (I am still learning about blog posts currently).

My question is, is this all there is to it? Surely there is much much more to it that I am missing. I always thought SEO was very complex but everything I’ve researched I genuinely understand and hopefully have been applying it correctly. Someone please explain to me how naive I am for believing that this is all there is to it. I am just waiting around to get hit with reality that SEO is much more than this. What are your thoughts about this?

I can't speak about Shopify since I've never used it, but what you described is the general gist of it.

At its core, SEO is simple: good site + good content + good links = $$$ ... But aside from these 3 pillars (which might very well mean 90% of a site's success), the 10% that's left is also crucial and usually differs on a case by case basis.

Like, for some sites, the extra 10% could mean better authority, or more aged content, more trust with google, more social media traffic, higher brand visibility, content that's updated more frequently, more indexed pages and / or ranked keywords, etc is what ranks your site over your competitors.

Of course, I didn't mention the technical side of things since I'm not particularly good at that, but technicalities are also more important than ever nowadays with the AI bubble, so that counts too :)

It sounds easy when we see tutorials but when you start implementing the methods, there will be lot of challenges. And then you will understand that it requires lot of patience and information to overcome those challenges.

No it is not easy. There are much more elements to it. Like you have to keep finding ways to recover your website from Google updates. And these updates come almost eact month now.

@GNMedia, the basics are what you’re picking up, but as @tazarbm said, SEO is a layered game. It's simple in theory but challenging in practice, especially as you battle algorithm updates and industry competition. Real mastery comes from handling the “10%” — refining technical SEO, handling updates, and constantly adjusting strategies for Google’s shifts.

SEO is like an onion. There are multiple layers to it. Keep reading and implementing what you learn. The fundamentals remain the same, but the way you do it changes with time, so what worked 5 years back, doesn't work anymore.

Just as an onion’s layers contribute to its flavor, each aspect of SEO—from keywords to backlinks—plays a crucial role in enhancing visibility. Finally, like onions can make you cry, neglecting SEO can lead to frustrating results in your online presence

Yes and no. SEO is easy if you know exactly what kind of backlinks that will rank you well, otherwise you won't get it right. For example, Google News backlinks have proven quite effective just like niche edits used to do.

It really depends, there is seo to based to optimize user experience and move them where you want, for ad management, keywords, backlings, ads, content management and quality, some things could be easy other dificult, all depends in the approach you have and if you are using a method in particular, also you niche is important.

The hard part is that there is a million people who are doing the exact same shit as you are.

SEO is taking difficult every year.
Google take ON theirs money machine and with every google update kill all popular SEO instruments.

Put it this way; you are basically competing for market-share against every other website in your niche, so the competition, and thus the difficulty of SEO, will be largely dictated by how much money there is to be made. Having said that, you have done the right thing in getting started, now you just have to keep an eye on where your website currently resides within the search results, along with teh amount of traffic you are receiving, and then keep researching, learning and improving your website.

Learning the basics of SEO is like learning to drive a car - you're covering the important aspects like steering, braking, and accelerating. These skills are crucial because, without them, you wouldn't be able to get anywhere!

But if you want to really stand out and beat the competition, it's more like racing in Formula 1. Just like F1 requires more precision, special techniques, and a lot of practice beyond basic driving, advanced SEO needs more strategy, testing, and deeper skills to succeed.

In short, you're learning to drive right now, but if you want to reach the top in SEO, you’ll need to add those advanced, F1-level techniques to your toolbox.

It's kinda like cooking. At it's core, it is very easy to cook some food but making it taste alright is not so simple. Making a Michelin star type meal is downright impossible for a home chef with little training.

All you can do is work on it and the challenges will arise when they do and you will learn the best way to get past them at that time. It sounds like you are doing it right for now though, keep reading and keep testing and applying what you are learning.
