If you take a look at the supposed age of the universe at around Nine Billion Years and the supposed age of the earth at around Four point Six billion years. Then you look at the infinitesimal amount of time that we have been here, something on the order of 5-20 thousand years(Very Debatable).
I highly doubt that something we create or predict could cause the end of the world. Perhaps the end of us.. that's a possibility.
Being a non-theist, I would say atheist but I live in the bible belt and some crazy folks might come and burn me out.. I feel that there is ALOT of irrational thinking involved in the whole "End Times" deal. Now realistically speaking there occur Mass extinction level catastrophes about every 400 million years and if I remember my numbers right we are at about 390+ million years since the last one, so in that aspect YES we may be due a disaster, but that may occur in the next 20+million years give or take a millennia.. lol

Am I gonna worry.. I don't think so...

In my humble opinion two of the most popular 2012 evangelists, Jose Arguelles and Daniel Pinchbeck, are both egotistical morons who hitched their careers to a date far too soon in their immediate future. They should have followed the lessons of the physicists and talked about things on a cosmic timeline instead. Just because you have a religious experience on psychedelic drugs, does not mean that your flesh is of any great importance. Daniel Pinchbeck calling himself a messenger and a prophet is tantamount to Uwe Boll deciding that he's the next Scorsese.

Yeah, I read a lot of McKenna and his brother's books a few years ago. I have to admit that his theories OUTSIDE of 2012 interest me a lot more. Specifically, his conversations with Ralph Abraham and Rupert Sheldrake I thought touched on some much more cogent ideas. While I can't take his "science" very seriously, he was absolutely a brilliant man with a brilliant mind. Abraham, who is the only real empiricist out of that circle of people, said he was never fully convinced by either Rupert or McKenna that what they believed was legitimate. The math behind McKenna's Time Wave theory has been basically proven to be inaccurate. That said, the idea of Novelty theory gives me goose bumps.

To believe that ANYONE can accurately calculate the likelihood of these sorts of chaotic happenings is science fiction. Do I believe that we're on the brink of a kind of evolutionary leap? Absolutely, but it's something that is far more intangible. I saw Dr. Daniel Dennett speak recently at U Penn about this new branch of scientists who are beginning to take the idea of "not by genes alone" far more seriously. I'm in his boat. I'd be much more inclined to join this "quantum leap" conversation if it were about memes, not 2012. If science has taught me anything, it is that time is an arbitrary construct and that making predictions is a good way to lose respect in the field.

The thing about the 2012 theory is that different civilizations have used it in different contexts, without no way of really being able to know the other was doing the same. This could be (and likely is) a huge coincidence, but it's far different than your usual end of times theory.

The importance of this year is that there is going to be a magnetic pole flip. You will have to read about it in detail..I read it in a book.. have to look it up on the internet too....

2012 will be the year the magnetic poles of the sun flips....It flips every 11 years. Last time it flipped in 2001. So, it will be 2012 this time.

But our concern is whether the earth's poles will flip or not. I dont really think if anyone knows this for sure. Some say that the earth's poles flipped over 500,000 years ago(not sure) and some say 3000(not exact figure) years ago. But this time when the earth, sun and the galactic centre will line up in 2012, the conditions are said to be favourable for this to happen.

If it does happen...the sunspots will be so intense that they will be stopped by the earth's magnetosphere and all the electronic equipments will be destroyed(kinda effect simillar to nuclear explosion..more like an implosion)

Whether this is what happens as the effect of 1000s of years of 'chinese whispers' when the writings were in the sole keep of humans, or because the authors of religious knowledge were always imperfect humans and not the divine force, or because the knowledge given to humans was purposely imperfect, or because perfection itself is impossible in this world, it all arrives back at the same thing.
