I've tried a few backlinks and buying likes/views, but don't think they helped much.

You need to find a way to get real 3rd party traffic in the beginning because YouTube won't send any views to you.

I might have a trick here. If you have a website that's getting traffic, embed your video and make it invisible, autoplay and muted.

I have never used the blackhate technique.
Because I've learned a lot of blackhate.

Currently the focus is building a database.
After I researched it to Jack Ma.
