[Journey] Building an iOS & Android App Empire

Update:

Here are some numbers. Currently, I have:

2x Google Play Developer accounts (both are "officially" connected). One for games, another one for regular apps.
2x Apple App Store accounts: One of my company, one personal account

Apps in total:
Android: 8
iOS: 20

Earnings:
Through ads: $90-130 per day. It always varies. Also, I don't really check all the ad networks every single day and do the math. I do it on a weekly or monthly basis.

Adnetworks:
- Admob
- Applovin
- Unity

At the moment, I don't use Facebook Audience Network and also not Facebook ads, because they were deactivating my ads account without any reason. Something in their algorithm triggered to deactivate the account. What happened was: I made a hotspot with my phone, logged in to Facebook ads, and the next second I received an email saying my FB ads account was deactivated, so I stopped sending traffic to FAN just to be safe. I already contacted Facebook and told them to review my ads account. I never had any ads rejected, and never advertised any shady or prohibited niche. The block suddenly happened after I logged in, totally randomly.

Advertising:

- Used Facebook ads a little bit to try and check (one additional benefit of Facebook ads is you actually gain followers, etc. and its good for brand awareness)
- Google Adwords
- I spent around $30 per day on advertising. Why? Read below.

Testing apps:

So before I think about spending money/time on ranking apps or spending money/time on improving apps, I first test the apps.

How do I do it?

I am integrating Firebase and buying around 1000 Tier 3 app installs. After this, I carefully check all the stats on Firebase.

For those of you who have no clue what Firebase is: Basically, it's an analytics tool by Google, similar to Google Analytics, but just for apps. It tracks everything.

So, what do I take a look at?

- User activity & retention
- User engagement time
- Event count per user, specifically: ad_impression, user_engagement. These two are telling me how often they are doing certain actions in the app, and more importantly: it tells me how often they are exposed to ads. The more often they are exposed to ads, the more money I earn.

Firebase is full of this kind of information and they are really valuable. You can also set up your own events. I didn't do it so far, but I should. For example, creating an event every time an interstitial ad is being shown, or every time a rewarded ad is shown. This information is important if you want to scale your app. You need to know your numbers.

Here are some of my thoughts and also some real experiences:

Most people are obsessed with finding a good niche with low competition. Yes, that's a good approach. BUT, you can also enter a medium-high competitive niche and make a much better app. In my opinion, there is one important factor, which really makes a difference: In-app activity.

I had two apps in the exact same niche for Android. Wanted to rank for the same keywords. One app was made with java and was kinda simple: slider, main menu, 10 buttons, which were all leading to one single screen. The other one was a flutter app, but it had settings, different categories, looked much better, had way more screens, videos, etc. and the Flutter app just ranked so much faster and easier than the Android app. Why? Because the engagement time was just so much higher, the in-app activity was just so much higher.

I think this is also one of the reasons why TikTok took off that much in the App Store. The engagement time and in-app activity of TikTok are simply crazy. They must have it really easy to rank. Some people are using TikTok for several hours per day, keep scrolling. I mean, if you think about this just from an analytical perspective and you know how the Google algorithm works, then you would try everything to keep the people as engaged and active as possible. In this perspective, TikTok is incredibly good. Just think about it: One scroll and the next shitty video appears, and you can't simply stop, because all the videos are funny or weird.

So how can you actually improve the engagement time and also the in-app activity?

That's quite simple. Depending on your app/niche, you just need to add more content and work on the user interface. Making the content accessible easier. Also, don't spam people with ads in the beginning.

If you have a game: Add achievements, leaderboards, share buttons, daily rewards, bonuses, and premium items they can unlock after a certain time. All of this will lead to one thing: More engagement, more in-app activity, and higher retention. People won't just uninstall your app right away, they will open your app the next day to get rewards. They will also open the app after 7 days because they want to get a special item or reward.

Don't think they are simply adding rewards, etc. because it makes the game more fun, no, they do it because they want to have more in-app activity and retention.

If you are using Unity, I can recommend this plugin: Easy Mobile Pro. I With this one, you can easily implement achievements, leaderboards, and so on.

Additionally to all of that, from my experience, there is some kinda "shadow ban" on Google Play. They prevent your app from ranking/getting organic traffic in the first 30-45 days. That's Google being Google. The same crap happens on their search engine. So, if you want to upload an app, publish it as soon as possible and then keep updating it. Don't spend weeks or months developing it. Publish the minimal version of it as soon as possible. It actually saves you a lot of time.

What will I do next?

I have a whole list of apps that I wanna make. Around 20-30 apps more. So yeah, I keep developing, testing and checking.

Short update regarding the other app stores and my experience with them.

I uploaded my Android apps to the Samsung Galaxy Store, Amazon App Store, and the Huawei App Gallery. I uploaded around 5 apps to each store.

Samsung Galaxy Store

Extremely picky and sensitive. It seems like they are cross-checking the apps with the Google Play Store. It seems like they depend on Google Play in some way. Out of 5 apps, they only accepted two. One of them got removed after a few days.

Good of them: They always give a reason why they didnt accept the app, even though I don't get it. For example, they sent me two screenshots saying "Installation failed" - but whats the context? Why did the installation fail? What device did they use? What Android version did they use? No information like that given.

The two apps got a few downloads, but really nothing special. I am talking about 10-20 downloads each.

Is it worth the hustle and time? No. Why would I investigate and deal with this stuff, if it's just about a few downloads? Also, I don't really understand their deal.

Amazon App Store

Not that strict, but absolutely not transparent. I uploaded 5 apps there, and three got accepted. Two refused. Reason for refusing the apps:

"Your app submission does not meet one or more of our acceptance criteria for some or all targeted devices. Failure reason(s) are listed below: Your app contains metadata title, icon, description, screen shot, keywords that could mislead customers, as the content resembles the content of another mobile application OR suggests another functionality."

So basically, the reason can be anything. What I also noticed: The review takes kinda long. 5-8 days.

What I noticed was that I get kinda few downloads from Japan, but also here: the amount of downloads is just low.

Huawei App Gallery

They are the least picky. All 5 apps got approved. The review was fast. Downloads/impressions are much higher than on Amazon and Samsung Store.

So I would definitely recommend to also upload on Huawei App Gallery. Only thing you have to keep on mind: Google services won't work. So you might have to change some stuff in your app.

Great update @nakamura. The problem with huawei app gallery is that admob doesn’t work with huawei apps. What monetization are you using for huawei apps?

I am using Appodeal mediation. So basically Applovin and Unity Ads are mainly for Huawei App Gallery.

I am not sure if Admob mediation actually works for Huawei. Normally, it should.

There are other ad networks. As I wrote above: Mediation like Appodeal works great. Facebook, Unity, Applovin are great.

I upload the app to google play store and its live.

how long does it take for admob to approval ads.........?

You have to add the link to your store listing, they review it. For me it takes around 2 hours until "they" (its definitely AI) approve it

You wrote that approx 20 to 30 apps.
All different apps or just one idea with different layout , colors, etc?

Where you take ideas for apps?
I don't even know what app to make for a start .
There is huge amount of garbage useless apps everywhere .
And people still download them ?

Someone asked what apps you make so quickly .
Can you answer that?

How much time passed after uploading apps when you got first earning

Never even thought about looking into samsung or huwawei or amazon stores. Great post and following

Mostly different apps. Different niches.

Ideas for apps? Mostly brainstorming, watching trends, sometimes through keyword research.

You are right, there is a lot of garbage, especially on Google Play. If you make quality and full-working apps, it will be easy for you to stand out.

Sorry, I am not answering questions regarding my apps. Why? First of all, what difference does it make to you if you know what apps I make? Then, there are thousands of people on here reading this thread. I don't know them. I don't know if I can trust them. Some could harm my apps, copy them, give bad reviews, or whatever. You see, there is simply absolutely no benefit for me to share my apps. It can cause me headaches.

In general, I wouldn't recommend anyone posting links to their website or their apps on a Blackhat forum with thousands of money-hungry people, which often would do anything just to earn themselves a few bucks. It's simply not a good idea.

How much time passed after earnings? It really depends on the competition and the niche. If there is no competition at all and you will instantly rank #1 for your main keyword, people will instantly download it. If you are in a high-competitive niche and you won't show up in the rankings at all, you won't get downloads, and therefore you won't see earnings.

Yes, I think the Amazon App Store is the easiest to start with. From what I remember Huawei and Samsung both asked for business information, but not sure. I made the developer accounts on there more than a year ago.

Btw. there is also one more benefit if you upload your Apps to all these stores: You get high DA backlinks to your website.

I don't know if this is a sign for me to start making apps or what.

Just got email from Google Admob lol.

Get your apps to us, show them to the world etc .

Funny

Funny thing is, these days Facebook/Meta keeps messaging me. They send me emails every day, even tell me I will get $100 bonus once I earned $100 using FAN. So far I used FAN with my personal account, not my business account, so they I think I didn't use FAN at all yet.

But, Facebook/Meta also just restricted my FB ads account without any warning, for no reason at all. I logged in and got an email it is restricted. They already take 2 weeks to review the ads account.

So I replied to the email of Facebook/Meta with: "You guys just restricted my FB ads account, no reason, no explanation, nothing. Why should I trust you with advertising and money?" and they didn't reply. Wankers

Do you develope your own apps? both for Android and iOS? Do you make them native? or you outsoucing the developement to some kind of indian/paki in Fiverr or upwork?
Which SDK do you usually implement? (Admob, FAN, Firebase, Crashlytics? Appsflyer?)
How usually you update the apps? (once per month?)
Have you ever tried to sell some app in EmpireFlippers or Flippa? (they said I can do easely x25-30 month revenue)
Are you focused 100% in app industry or you work in other job?
Have you tried ecommerce apps?
