I studied spanish in school pretty intensively, and got all the basics down:

Verb conjugation and basic nouns I know.

I suppose my motivation for learning is that at some point, I want to move out of the U.K.

Realistically speaking in the long term, I can probably put 1 hour per day to learning.

The main objective of my learning is to:

Refresh my memory on past and future tense verb conjugations

Conjugate more complex verbs including an additional pronoun such as “give me that”

I’ll be honest, learning from books isn’t really my style.

I’m thinking of watching shows in spanish with subtitles, and supplementing that with a language app like duolingo in the evening.

To anyone that is bi-lingual, what did you find effective for learning your second language? (Aside from going to the country) :)

Thanks.

You will find Dualingo app awesome for this.

But perhaps it will be a bit too easy for you, not sure.

edit: You already mentioned it, but I guess I just then can add that it helped me a lot.

if udont like books maybe you will like audio/video training courses

Dude, yes.

I've been trying to learn Spanish for a while.

Fuck Duolingo, babble etc. It is not for serious learners.

Pick up Anki. It has a learning curve. But it is soooo fucking powerful. And add these two decks.

Few things that have helped me. Immerse yourself in the language.
  • Change the default language in your laptop/phone to Spanish.
  • Listen to Spanish songs, add Google translate extension to your browser, and read Spanish comments on those youtube videos.
  • Watch Spanish shows Narcos, Vis-a-vis, La casa de Papel, so many good shows

Good luck op, it's a slow process like IM.

Not gonna lie, I spent a good few minutes trying to understand that top paragraph, thank you for typing in spanish.

I agree, I feel as if shows with subtitles are probably the best thing to go with.

And of course talking to native speakers.

Absolute legend.

I’m gonna blatantly copy and paste your comment into my notes. :D

I have not heard of Anki before , but i’m sure it is better than the trash known as Duolingo!

Date a Spanish woman or work in Spanish business so you are often forced to speak the language or at least learn something.

I think you quoted a wrong post.

No method listed here has worked for me.
The only thing that brings the results is communication.

Anki? I couldn't memorize a single verb. Not working very well.
Nice concept. Weak outcomes.

Writing words on paper. Challenging my beliefs about the language.
Checking facts. Talking to a stranger.
This works.

If you're already somewhat proficient, things like duolingo and courses won't be as effective as immersion. Listening to radio, watching TV shows, and talking to people who speak the language is best to become truly fluent

Medical students use Anki to become doctors. And thousands of language learners use anki. :)

I don't think you have given it a fair shot.

I still couldn't get a word into my head. So I don't think it's really doing much.

It's just not going to work if you have 1000 words on C1 or C2 level and write on BHW without really using those words.

Why would you learn words of C1 or C2 level as a beginner.
There are like 100s of different decks on Spanish.
You can create flashcards that work for u. Words, audios, pictures, sentences anything.

And yes, using the stuff you learn is def important. I am with you on that.
