I was checking one of my competition site and i found that he has a lot of backlink on the first page of many website! but when you check the site where their backlink is placed you don't see it anywhere on the page, unless you do a VIEW SOURCE, where you can see many other sites linking there.

can someone explain to me how they hide the links from the main page but the robots can see it?

The first site is using the Marquee element.

<MARQUEE width=10 height=10 scrollamount=10000>

Basically they're creating a 10x10 marquee on the page where those links show. Without looking into it further I would imagine they're then hiding it with css, putting it off screen or something similar.

Waoo it's amazing how many sites from china are doing that. thousands of sites with the same trick.

I thought it was some kind of tools like PRstorm or something else that was leaving backlinks on the front page!

some of them hide the links in the background in areas where viewer will not click. Or just embed them to lay -layered in the back. matching the same color as the background. This means viewers cant see these link but bot see them.

This method is used so a site doesnt have hundreds of outgoing links visible on the site.

Hmm. I just remembered to check up on my WordPress MU installation.

If I may add, some WordPress themes are guilty of similar tactics as well. Some theme authors, it seems, are rather sneaky in building backlinks to their site. I keep getting commenting activity waiting for moderation on an "under construction" WordPress MU site.

Anyway, changed all the themes back to the default.

Oh yeah. There are many wp(mu) plugins/themes which introduce unwanted functionality or links. I personally check each line of a theme for js-loads, hidden links and other garbage.
