I want to know if website design is something that I spend money on instead of going with the default theme?

Shall the website design be of secondary importance?

I think that design is important 'cos can make the difference between your and your competitors.

With free or cheap tools you can make nice design

Ps: most part of time I try to make sites for user optimized. It's reason that I try to make it with nice design

With Good web design,

Your business can have a new set of customers
Your site directly reflects your branding. A stylish site can help you connect with your branding.

Vital and absolutely essential.

If you have a website that looks horrible and that doesn't work, you won't go anywhere in regards to visitors and that.

I would spend a lot of time on your Site Design and look. Make sure that your site works properly and that the buttons work as they should.

Use a wordpress theme if u really dont need a lot of customization, there are tons of good ones with a top design.

If u are going to hire someone focus on
1.Responsive website u dont want something looking bad on mobiles
2.User experience, everything should be clear and not hidden.
3.Load speed

Its more about what you provide then the design. The interface should be easy to use and read. Take for example Reddit, it has one of the shittiest design but still one of the most visited websites on the internet.

I've made thousands of websites for my online businesses and let me tell you, the way humans value first impressions towards other humans also goes the same way as humans value first impressions towards websites.

There’s no denying the importance of good website design. While content is certainly the core of your brand, a badly-designed site will turn people away before they ever decide to read anything. Now, I’m not saying that you should blow all your money on a web designer, but I am telling you that you will want your site to be fast, functional, and easy on the eyes. Everything else is a bonus, though it is always welcome.

Web design is not important, is CRUCIAL.

The same way you get captivated by beautiful people you also captivated by well designed websites. Design and good experience, makes you trustworthy to your customer. If you're trustworthy = more customers are willing to trust their money on you, you see the trend.

Now this doesn't mean you should throw everything you can into your website just to make it "pretty". Be careful with the speed and experience you provide. Slow website = Bad experience = Bad Seo.

In case you wanna test your website performance you should use Google Chrome Lighthouse, tells you everything you need to know and you should look forward to something like this:

Well the most important is traffic, than every single thing that boost your traffic. (website design, page load speed, content, etc)
So a simple, creative design with good UI is the best, and enough. it's better to spend money on domain name, and content

Do you think the default theme is attractive enough to boost clicks, user experience or even user friendliness? If yes, then you should go with the default theme; however the issue here is that this default theme is most likely used by a lot of websites and your visitors may have seen it a lot of times.

Think about it, what makes your website different from others? Will this so called "default theme" make you unique? The answer is probably no. Spending on a custom made web design is absolutely the best investment you could ever make provided it looks good, it's well-made, it's mobile optimized and is easy on your visitors.

A good looking design can reduce your bounce rate , of-course content plays an important role as well. Coming onto your second question, no it's not that important unless you are happy with your default theme.
