I agree. Its all about ethics. As was said earlier, this is business, not war. Whoever thinks its war is in the wrong business to begin with. Competition exists solely so the market doesn't go stale and so new and improved products can be provided by other people with the same passion. Attacking a competitor because you can't rank like them is juvenile and shows your insecurity.

That being said, I agree 100% with Micallef. If it wasn't for people trying to hurt their competitors, blacklisting websites would be a breeze for G.

One oversight in this idea is that while you may or may not be successful in having your competitor sandboxed, there is no guarantee that YOU will be the one to take his place in the SERPs. If you're spending most of your efforts trying to destroy the competition rather than improving your own wesbite(s) you'll have nothing to show for it in the end. If you get top serps without using this kind of tactic, your site is a lot more likely to maintain that high position.

I don't do it on a regular basis, is not my main marketing strategy because I know how to drive traffic the white hat way. However there are times when a keyword is really competitive, and this is an option, however my last option.

You should read Influence by Robert Cialdini, I found that this post is really bias toward what Debian said because he is Jr Vip and somewhat an authority. I read about similar tatics on some posts on this forum and are not flame the same way.

Is really funny when many of you, and I don't mean all, talk about ethics, when in the end the way you make money sometimes doesn't have any ethics at all. Tricking people to install zango, using mturk workers to make CPA offers, selling reharsh crap promising lots of money for DP newbies is as unethical as well.

I will only use this strategy on ultra competitive keywords and as my last option. So this bias is really non sense, if you don't like the idea fine, but don't get mad like a little girl, I suppose you have lots of White Hat sites.

It's funny to analyze bias, try it on some posts, if some authority gives an opinion (Jr Vip, Mod, Admin) early, most of the time it's backup in some way.

I will recommend that you just take the idea and don't say really stupid things. And to many my recommendation is not being fooled by post count. I've been a passive listener most of the time.

It's funny, an average intelligent person will understand this strategy is correlated to PR and trust history on Google. Doing this to a new ranking site is not the same than doing it to some site that has years of good history and great PR.

lol where have you been? this is a very very very very old tactic, google fix this in their algo yrs ago...its pretty useless as its obvious if a good ranking whitehat site suddenly gets massive spam related links that a competitor is trying to bring it down

This method will generally work on an unestablished, low PR site. I had one of my wordpress blogs hacked and stuffed with spam links and almost instantly it lost its rankings. I'm sure 100 or so sudden spammy backlinks would also be seen as suspicious by google for a new website and thus apply a harsh penalty.

Personally, I don't see how this would work. In fact, I think Google is smarter than this. As a side note to debian, I don't see how post count makes somebody a newbie here. It's the money that does the talking. White hat, black hat, or just plain dick moves like this. We are all going after the same thing, and it's the only thing that should be used to just a person as a noob or 1337.

Post count more so has to do with trust. That's about all it counts for really. Well, and backlinks if you're able to put a link in your sig.
