No mention of Microsoft finally paying their dues , and helping fight the virus industry they created lol. For a free solution I would use Microsoft built in security from win 7 and up. If I'm paying, and it's for personal pc then I would go norton, I know they go up and down on the rankings but I'm used to the tools and they have been around since the beginning. I also like malware bytes but dont use it as a stand alone solution. My preferred free software firewall is zone alarm. mcafee i uninstall instantly whenever i see it, would never use it again, resource hog and useless. find viruses hiding inside the os and it does nothing but work to stop me from fixing it???

The reality is that whatever antivirus you choose, it doesn't guarantee you will be safe from viruses - some AV programs pick up certain viruses, other don't and thats just the way it is.

Working in the IT industry I have seen many occasions where a computer has a nasty virus on it and the antivirus program is completely oblivious.

I'm not one of those people who say you don't need an AV program though - its definitely very important to stop most stuff. But you need education as well - so that you are careful what you open, what you download and also always try to check unknown files and sites using something like virustotal.com

If you are really paranoid like me, then reload your computer every couple of months as well

And purchase 2 user 3 year pack if u r buying for office. U will get that at the cheapest price.

eset nod32 my favorite. good software firewall too.
kaspersky is nice, but a little too heavy resource-wise.
avast free is good if you don't mind the nag pop-ups.
give them all a test run to see which you like best.
