PAD submission experience

So last Friday night I did the PAD file submission thing with a small program I wrote myself. I thought I'd write about my experience on this thread and maybe I'd attract the attention of readers with more expertise than I.

It took a little more than 24 hours to see visits to my site from software directories. First problem became immediately apparent: some of these directories did NOT feature a link back to my site. In fact, the more prominent ones did not. Doesn't this greatly reduce the utility of pad submission technique?

If you make a mistake in your pad file, do you do another run of submissions (re-submissions I guess) after fixing the pad.xml to force directories to pick up the amended file?

I can quickly write a good number of small progs for this niche I'm in. For the broader niche my site is in, I could easily write 20 or more small programs. And in fact, I can easily create yearly editions for each program. It wouldn't be a whorish hack; its a meaningful thing for the niche: "Online Disgronificator 2009". But I think it would dilute the link juice I'm looking for if G**gler's are searching for "Online Disgronificator 2009", but just "Online Disgronificator". You brickbats and suggestions welcome.

did you get many downloads to your "program ?"
 
I used a number of them. Avangate, PADExpress, Promosoft, and a couple of others.

Actually, Avangate refused my submission request.

If this pans out as a tactic then I'll definitely pay for full versions of one or more submitters. To me it looks like PADExpress and Promosoft are the leaders in the segment. Opinions on their relative merits are welcome.

I did check out some of the directory listings in detail, and I did get several downloads within the first 24 hours of listing. I'm assuming the bulk of those come from getting listed on the directories' "new software" pages. Which is incentive I guess to keep pushing out small updates to the program and re-running the submssion program. If you can do it with a minimum of keystrokes and mental wear and tear, why not?

Can anyone here say that such re-submission helps SERP visibility?

BTW, my "program" is a real one. A definite utility if you are in my rather tight niche. Not a great program; to bring it up to speed I'd need to polish it a bit.

I worry about the idea of building junk programs like screensavers and toolbars and special purpose browsers that don't have any real added value at all. I've got a personal codebase in this niche that I can leverage quickly.

Actually, I can see a value to a good special-purpose screensaver. But those toolbars are damn near worthless. If I was running a good directory I'd want to clear those things out.

I've given thought to the idea of running a network of directories just so that you can give prominent placement to your own stuff.

Last night I used P*dE*press a 2nd time to resubmit the pad.xml I first ran last Friday night. I had made a small error in the file that caused a few directories to list my software inaccurately.

I took a closer look at the successful submission list a little more closely than I did last weekend. The size of the list was much shorter than expected; only a few dozen.

Is there in any way in P*dE*press to examine the list of unsuccessful submissions and find out WHY they were refused? I don't see any.

Make a widget for:

OSX Dashboard
Yahoo Gadgets
Vista Gadgets
Google Gadgets

you get killer boost with the links from the giants. I should write a howto on that some day... At least you know why most widgets are stupid and spammy now.

pad file is auto discovery
if you pad file modifed these website will auto update you infomation.
or some site have a update page when you update pad file you can manual submit for request update.

How does it compare time wise making and submitting a widget rather than pad file submitting (which is long and boring)? If it takes less time and gets better results, then sign me up!
 
i did some pad submissions last year...one of my sites got some descent traffic and now makes good $$ w/sedo

Btw here's a good PAD submission software. Author claims it's just as good as the paid versions, as his software uses high PR directories.

Just wondering, is anyone getting good backlinks from PAD submits?
 
I have done a fair amount of pad file submissions, and what I find is that you rarely get any backlinks to the web url that you enter during the pad file creation process. Instead you will see that you will get the backlink to the location of your pad file (the .xml you upload)

To answer another question about if you have updates, most sites poll your .xml file occasionally, and update automatically. All you need to do is re-upload your changes to your server and that should do it.
 
which pad submitter is the best right now and is it worth investing time in pad for backlinks? how many backlinks do you get from those archives?
 
I have padadd and havnt used it. It's licensed for a year with 10 submits. I was thinking of a small program to promote a couple of my sites. My programming skills include basic and my professional screensaver maker, lol. Padadd is for webmaster type software. If I get some solid backlinks, it would be worth it. TheEditor, I like your verbage--lol, it is a "whorish" hack, and the "G" can be a "B", but if it's profitable+a small update with little work, I think you should do it and if you get tired of doing it, make your last submission Online Disgronificator-Super Edition and quit.
