How to rank in google images.

How would one rank an image to top seed in google images ?

Would it be the same as normal seo for google?

Some of the basics to keep in mind while trying to rank in image search.

1) Alt Attributes so that google know what its all about.
2) Filename should also be relevant.
3) There should be some related text too describing the image.
4) Use unique images, copied images can also be detected by google.

Are you specifically targeting to rank a specific image, or is that image part of your site?

The fastest and easiest way to the have that image posted on an Authority site, properly formatted with alt codes, naming etc.

Have the image leeched and placed on several *other* websites, but hosted at your target location. [if on authority type site]

If you have a HTML5 webpage, ensure it's Microdata is set according (if that's the case, then scrap the meta content)

Have the image appear on multiple pages on your website (like footer, or featured posts as a sidebar).

Your website would still need to be pretty well optimized, but say you are tail-end pg1 or pg2, you can leapfrog the others using these direct methods for the image result in that category (if it is likely people will look at the image search).

I am sure you can do the same process for video (embedded on targeted sit, alt code for embed, microdata and on multiple pages).

Personally, I find naming images the most effective way, the other elements are overkill, however make sure you optimize for longtail keywords as well for a whole bunch of images on your website.

Why do you want to rank in Google Images? It's a huge waste of bandwidth in my honest opinion. Now that google has hijacked images more than it had them displayed before, you will not even get a lot of traffic from it.

I have one site that gets a ton of google images traffic, all it has is a lot of high quality images and some text, no alt tags, or other spammy stuff. It might help, but might also hurt in the long run as we've seen with recent updates.

I ranked mine just doing same things what I do to my website. It ranked. I guess SEO is the best process to rank everything.

You can use an google images framebuster code to avoid this and keep all the traffic. Placing the next script between the head tags of your pages, will redirect users who click on the image to your page:

I've had images rank in Google accidentally. It seems to be a lot easier to rank for images. But the problem with images is that people just find the image, save it to their computer and never visit your site. I wouldn't waste my time trying to rank images.

Yeah, images are an awesome way to get up there easily. I've got a site that deals mainly with images and let's say I want to rank for a term. I put that in url, title tag, H1, image alt text, and somewhere in paragraph under the image that describes it. It also helps if you've got a large site with lots of interlinking, mine's 700+ images, with a static page devoted for each image as well as larger multi-image pages.

When you want to backlink to rank higher you have to figure out which page google is taking the image from by clicking on the search results and seeing where it takes you. Then you start your backlinking to that page. It works pretty well and the traffic you get comes easy while you're trying to rank your site in the web search for extremely large keywords. One of my images is in a 360,000 exact searches per month and my image was 20th with almost no work. It only gets like 20-30 visitors a day, but add up all 700 images and you've got a decent chunk of traffic.
