FB started rolling a new facial recognition software last week.

One "face", with multiple profiles...guess what happens? Bam!

It literally is a FACE book.

This technology is not new and it does not work at the accuracy that would be needed for it to uniquely identity the more than 400 million users from each other. Not to mention say you were to do something crazy like put up a picture with someone in it other than yourself, you're imply that you'd see a ban? Normally I'd think the person suggesting things like this was joking but this is not the lounge.

Have you noticed how you are asked to "identify" pics of friends? Are you seriously suggesting thats not accurate? O'rly? Friends identifying friends is how the system will learn.

The technolgy is way more advanced then you think... & all it has to do is detect duplicates, which "flag" the accounts for review.

Exactly. It's more or less the same method Google is using for book scanning; getting Internet users to teach their system how to recognise text.

This is some serious shit for anyone concerned about privacy. Imagine one company having a facial recognition database of over 400 million people. I don't use FB on a personal level but have this question - is it possible to photo tag people who don't have Facebook accounts?

Facial recognition isn't 100% accurate, but it's alot closer to home than many of you guys probably realize.

When I left the "offline" world I worked in Management with Hbc here in Canada and I can tell you that even they use the technology to spot people they have in their arrest database. The way it works is those cameras they have at all the entrances snap your pic as you enter the store, the software then scans through all the photo's LP (Loss Prevention) has taken (at all Hbc location), if it scores a hit the LP team is notified, if not the picture is discarded (thereby complying with privacy laws).

Hbc doesn't have a very sophisticated Loss Prevention team, so if they are already using it, where else has it already started that we don't know about?


@MM If they ever ask me to identify 6 or 7 random friends pictures on my personal account there is very little chance I'd succeed, and I've had the same people on there for years, but I'd still be lost! Just too many people, with too many pics!

Most western nations are playing photo tag with the new driver license & passport systems.

I could imagine this crowd sourced photo tagging database as a huge earner for FB by licensing the DB to governments, etc.

Photoshop the picture and add some colorings on there lol.. don't have to be a face either.. can be a pic of someone standing backwards. Plus the face recognition isn't very accurate.

Lol, fact is FB close 12 MILLION accounts a week. They are getting smartert and smarter.
Like all BH techniques, you have to catch it early, because it doesn't last forever.

They look at the whole account profile.

Friend acquisition
Message content
Interlinking of activities and friends
Links to "spam" sites

and more.

If you have accounts that fall into a couple of the catagories above, then sooner or later they will be shut.

They are well aware that "ageing" of accounts is a technique, as is interspersing "real" friends with bought or hacked friends.

Get used to it. Just about every BH technique has a life span, by the time the "automation" software for BH stuff comes out, you can bet your ass we are already well into the "middle aged" area of that technique, and the "real" gurus are only letting the rest of us know because they realise that the lifespan for the hack is almost up.

End of the day, why do people make hacking software and sell a few hundred copies for $50 a shot?

If the technique was THAT good, and the stories about them making $25,000 a month were true, why the feck would they bother?

Do you think they are doing you a favour out of the goodness of their hearts?

Get real.

The software is the last throw of the dice, the last chance to cash in on a social buzz - this same software eventually floods the market and raises the profile of the method or hack to the point that the WEB2.0 sites spot it and counter it - and directly leads to getting the entire technique countered or nerfed.

Like all good marketers, the software developers made money on the way up - and money on the way down.

I'm not saying the sw is crap, i'm just saying 9 times out of ten by the time a BH technique gets automated and methods sold - then it's only a matter of time before it stops working altogether.

TO use BH you've got to think ahead, what's the next big thing - not the last.

Ideally, have a solid reliable (probably WH) web presence to fall back on.
Unique content and good links (that's REAL unique content and REAL links)

This is just like googles duplicate content filter & youtubes "copyright" & duplicate filters...but with 400million "faces" already been scanned how easy is it going to be to find fresh faces?

Each user has 100+ friends... with 100+ friends been "crowd sourced" to confirm the profile pics identity its going to be pretty damn accurate.

I'm not saying they aren't closing in on some nefarious purpose here, but just like FB says this isn't really Facial recognition like your thinking. It finds faces in a picture just like any $80 dollar digital camera and then highlights them so you can easily tag them. It should probably be called "face finder". I'm not saying that Facebook doesn't have the resources to launch something like your suggesting one day, but this isn't it. And FB is the world's largest photo sharing site, the pure processing power need to compare all those photos hardly seems worth the effort when it's so easy to find other reasons to ban. Like spamming or not changing ip's or all the other stupid stuff people do.

Well I see how this system could work, just based on how serious technology has been getting lately. Gotta admit, programmers are going balls to the walls even if its blackhat or whitehat.

Second of all, I see how this system wouldn't work accurately. There are a bunch of people who simply, Right click -> Save Image -> Upload on their profile.

The software couldn't be written to ban all "duplicate profiles that have the same photo", because they would experience a huge downfall. People host party pictures where theres more than 7 faces in a picture. Which are on other profiles as well. Married people with the same photos, and etc.

I feel for them to succeed on this security measure to an exact tee, would take them at least a few more years.

It's not going to happen, what about those who doesn't have a webcam? Do you think Facebook will ban them? Also, I'm pretty sure it can be bypassed with ManyCam's fake webcam function.

I wouldn't get the problem even if this info was accurate.. There's plenty of sw that intercepts the specific APIs used by a webcam acting as a "fake" one.

Start your fake cam sw, pick a pic of a random idiot scraped from somewhere and login with it. It's not like with passports or IDs where you have to show up in person and they can actually verify how similar you are to the pic on your document...

Not to mention I'd obviously choose ONLY pics of Ron Jeremy and various other porn stars...

Why would you use your real pic in all of your FB accounts? Or the same pic? This is just stupid.
