How can you tell if your niche is going to be profitable? I have a main keyword and some nice longtails. However, before I start writing my blog how can I tell if my keyword is going to be researched enough to get my adsense ads clicked on and for it to be worth it?

I know how many searches there are in google but how many people are actually looking for the keyword?

Isn't there software out there that will tell you this though?

Test, test test and test again, I know it probably not what you want to hear, but test campaigns are the bread n butter of marketing

Yea gotta agree with Dave. You have to be in the game to win. You cant defeat yourself before you already try. Who knows it could turn out to be a big profit niche or it could be nothing, but you dont know unless you try.

A good indicator is how many monthly searches it gets though.

Hmm. So, I could spend a few hundred dollars on some nice articles.. get ranked on the first page of google... make no money..... and just have to try again?

Go to the google keyword tool and put in your keywords. Click show all on the columns thing, and it will show you how much people are paying to have their ads shown in the top couple spots. They will probably bid a bit lower for the content network & part of that is what you get when someone clicks the adsense ad you show. It will also show you how many searches the terms get & how much completion there is between advertisers.

yes , thats all about testing . You test - fail , try again on different niche till you find goldmine . There is no easy way . And you don't need to think a lot , if you see potential , try it .

Why spend a few hundred dollars on articles? Write your own or re-write some. If you want to know if there is a market for your keyword, type it into G and see how many sponsored ads come up. You can also test it at blogger before you commit to a domain, hosting, etc.

just check Google's adword's keyword tool to find out the the number of searches, competition, CPC, etc.

also, Google your main keyword for your niche and check to see how many Adwords advertisers there are. If there are a lot of ads running for your main keyword, this means that there is money in your niche.

As far as your long tail keywords, test them out with Adwords. You will quickly get a feel for how many people are searching for your keywords each day and which are converting.

Then just tweak your campaign, and test some more.

Look at what comes up on google when you search for each of the keywords you want to rank for. Are there LOTS of affiliate sites in the organic listing? Are there lots of ads on the right side?

Do you know what the search volume is for the niche, and for each keyword? If not, head over to http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/

You wont get it right the first time. You might not fail but it will take you time and time again to fine tune your methods and your niche before your maximize your profits. Sometimes your niche might be too broad or not broad enough. You will figure out what works and what doesn't after comparing your changes.

OCI is supposed to give you an indication of commerciality i.e. conversion rates, but this should not be relied upon 100% when choosing your keywords and long tail phrases.

Ultimately, I agree with the others....do your research and monitor performance...its mainly trial and error.

If I want to know how much traffic I can get for set of keywords I set up and run a PPC campaign for a day.

In one day I can figure out if there is any interest in the niche. Determining if I can make it profitable I will have to do that "T" word, testing....thats the only way to figure out if it will be profitable.

You can also take a look at the top results for your terms and see what they are doing, this can give you some clues as to how they are monetizing there site.

If it were easy everyone would be rich.
