Why are some marketplace threads titled this way?

Been here quite a while now, and every so often i notice a thread with a title like this.

Notice the blank areas

I have always wondered why. Is it to help a thread get better noticed, like stand out more? Or for some other reason?

If it is to help it get noticed better, then it fails big time with me, with exception to this particular thread i totally ignore all that are titled this way.

It looks messy and annoying.

I guess that would be why. Yea doesn't help much because you writing this thread is what made me just notice it

Yes, it's to make it stand out more. People do this on Craigslist with stars and solid block text to draw more attention to their ads as well.

Never seen this type of thing in website titles on google search results. Wonder why........probably because no one would click the link.

Not just that, it just looks spammy and obnoxious in search engines (as you can see by the link m4dm4n posted). :D

I mean, just look at how bad special characters look in the SERPs:

I feel like my computer got a Trojan horse just by looking at that thing.

Well ofcourse they get more attention if not everywhere, atleast on something which is close to wall of text. Think about it. Other thing after that is how you perceive them. As some said it looks spammy and maybe unprofessional and they don't even bother to look inside the link or text or so...

Taking the risk of gaining attention but at the same time risking people not clicking it because it looks like they are trying to beat competition to much. Same thing as ^ everybody said above.
