Before testing, it averaged 1.40 - 1.60 seconds and often went above 2.00

Here's the http://zemalf.com/1443/w3-total-cache/ & https://www.besthostnews.com/guide-to-w3-total-cache-settings-with-cloudflare/. The first is a little dated but I've spent around an hour optimizing my site this way so it's no problem.
I've still got to fiddle with query strings and browser caching so this will only get faster. Optimizing images is also a must & I recommend https://wordpress.org/plugins/ewww-image-optimizer/installation/.

I forgot to mention I'm still on Shared Hosting but switching to dedicated. That's in the air right now so this should improve your site speed regardless.

great share OP, ewww is a very powerful plugin that every sites should have, the bad thing is that not all hosting accept it. Alternative can be smush it.
 
I've heard Smush.it has been glitching for many. Still a viable alternative. My site is loading faster than Amazon with these settings, and while it's nowhere near the size of it, that's an impressive result regardless. The important thing is installing + configuring necessary plugins, deactivating the rest and uploading files as small as possible to begin with.

I recently optimized the loading time of one of my sites. I only won about 500ms and within a week ranking went up from #6 where it was sitting for months to #4 for main keyword. So yes, loading time is still an important ranking factor.
 
Nice post. Although google say speed is only a very small factor in rankings, it is definitely a factor.
I have also seen rank increases in the past after increasing load time of a site so definitely is worth doing.
