I don't understand why anyone looking to hire a professional seo company would use someone that's not ranking in the first few pages of Google themselves. Am I missing something or wouldn't it stand to reason that a company offering to get your website on the first page of Google would be able to rank themselves there as well? After searching through a handful of people here on BHW offering seo, I wasn't able to locate them anywhere near first page results for what I determined was their keyword choice. Feel free to enlighten me...

I don't use my website for getting clients -- but when we get referrals most of those people look at the website first before contacting us.

Does it make much sense to bother when there are only 10 Spots and those people are going to do everything $$ wise to stay there ?

I'd rather use other ways to spend my money than chase rankings like that - especially for a newer company getting started in Seo for example.

You can ask the seo company to privide sample websites... Anyway, not all websites will rank. In seo field, ~40% is failure (this is from memory, from a market research based on top 12 seo companies in the world)

Still I don't see how you could possibly provide good results for someone else if you're unable to do it yourself. Anyways, I have really good rankings on about 3 highly competitive keywords and I don't pay anything to achieve those. Don't get me wrong, with the help of some programs here & there, I have paid some cash along the way but wouldn't you rather get some natural traffic instead of paying $5-$25 cpc? Especially if that's your field of work. It wouldn't make sense for me to hire my neighbor to do my landscaping work because that's his job if his own yard is overgrown and looks terrible. Right?

It's very simple:

The amount of money required to rank for "seo company" far outweighs the potential amount of clients you will get from that ranking.

For example, I predict it will cost me around $10-25k/mo to legitimately via white hat (for sustainability of rank) to rank for "seo company" or similar terms. It will also take me a few months, and an investment in a really good, aged URL that will sustain such an expensive campaign.

If it takes me 6 months, I'm in the hole at around $60k-150k. It will take a long time and a lot of clients to make up that money; there are far better mediums to advertise SEO on that will provide much faster, and likely positive ROI in a shorter timeframe.

That is why, my friend, my SEO company doesn't SEO itself.

TL;DR:
waste of money, no ROI

I always wondered the same.

Some don`t even rank for long tails, so it is not about ROI

As long as you have your client portfolio ranking for their keywords, it makes no business sense to try to rank your site for keywords like "seo company" and friends, as thetermy already said.

because some people are smart... thats all there is to it. there is a bigger market elsewhere in my personal opinion. The people that really know what they are doing with SEO keep it smaller. the world cant all be ranking #1... thats what those sites are for, scamming. the smart people find real people, not big businesses.

How bad is it that our neighbor across the street does landscaping and gardener work and their house is the worst taken care of on the block? They do a good job too.

Agree, Im a carpenter and at the end of the day when I get home, the last thing I wanna do is finally finish that small thing in my own house

When was the last time you saw a TV commercial for a company that creates the best TV commercials? By your logic, if they can't create a commercial that makes advertisers pay for their services, they must suck then right?

Obviously the answer is no. The truth is that they don't have to spend tens of millions of dollars to prove what they can do. They have a track record and portfolio of work that will convince the client that they know what they are doing. You should be more concerned with the company's SEO portfolio rather than the money they spend on ranking for keywords that you deem worthy.

It certainly doesn't cost tens of millions of dollar to rank a website. The tv commercials analogy is a little different then an seo business. However, if you're a landscaping business and your company vehicle is sitting in your driveway with your company logo on it and the entire outside of your home is an eyesore, it would certainly make you think twice before hiring that company. Same goes for seo in my opinion, if you're actually able to get results for clients then why would you not take a little time to do it for yourself? PPC is extremely expensive especially for an seo business because there's so much competition. The only way ppc would be worth it in my opinion is if you have an extremely high conversion rate. Anyway, if you're able to do swoop clients from other sources and show a portfolio and get the sale, great. Just makes sense to me to put your "skills" to work and save some ppc dollars.

I don't get it - you keep rambling on about that it's so important

You build your business that way and spend your time/money doing that - and others with a different opinion will do it another way.

Who made you the Almighty Decider in this matter ?? That it's your way or the Highway.

Take a Chill Pill and Get a Life.

Because companies ranked on first page for the search term "seo companies" are going to charge you an insane amount compared to those that aren't ranking for those search terms. It's just a risk that you've got to take but you can minimize it by asking them to provide a portfolio but then again they might provide you with a fake one. So at the end of the day, it's just a risk that you've got to take.

I've done very little optimization to my company's website for the very purpose that I don't want clients finding me online (at this point in time). Of course, I could deny bots access to my site so I'm not indexed, but I don't want to go that far.

why someone claim seo expert and sell a service in bts 50$ 100$ etc
why he cannot make site and earn with his skill.

So by your logic then, the top ten Seo company's will be the top ten listed on google for "Seo company"?

So your search for an Seo provider should be easy!

This thread got out of control pretty quickly. Didn't mean to get everyone all butthurt. Do whatever works for you :)
