I have found ways to find more PR5 non-moderated ******** links than I could ever safely build in one day - but one thing has always bugged me:

I keep hearing people say that site relevancy is important. How important is it? If your only goal is to climb in the SERPs, surely a good anchor text and high PR ******** is all you need... what does the subject matter of the target site count for when big G is positioning you...

Does anybody know the answer to this?

check the link profiles of all those viagra sites.
all from .edu sites.

With regards to Google, contextual relevancy has a great deal to do with the long term efficacy of any linking campaign. This is especially true if you're trying to rank for something competitive. Quality over quantity.

If I were you, I just link that high PR site with my web 2.0(linkwheel) that has relevant topic.

Thank-you for your replies on this.

If relevancy is important in google, what is the critical juncture at which it has an effect?

Do the spiders check for similarities in the url/content of your site and the site thats linking to you?

Or are we just talking about being safe on the off-chance of a manual review by Matt Cutts' motley crew..

Google uses a popular mathematical model to assess semantic relevancy. It is automated.

This thread couldn't have worked out better - an authoritative answer to my query, and a great way to adapt to the answer. Thanks for the help, spot-on.

actually the more i think about it the more useful that method is becoming... there are literally so many different things i can use it for now especially when looking at scraping the results...

Back link Relevency is everything to google - try strengthening your PR for a cosmetics site using a link from a Dog training site (I know this is an EXTREME example but wtf). google attributes authority based on AGE OF SITE AND attributes a quality score (Page Rank!) based on the relevency of any back link
