I've been on BHW for a long time now, and I can't believe the number of "which niche", "how do I make xxx", and "how to monetize x" threads here.
People, LISTEN. You are making IM out to be much harder than it is. If you really want to make money, it's not that hard.
Here are a few simple truths about IM. Read these carefully and remember them, because these are the roadblocks:
1. Dedication - IM can be the road to riches, seriously. You can make some SERIOUS cash, but it takes dedication. Lot's of dedication. The people who you see making 4-5 figures a month, they probably put in years of trial and error before hitting their nest egg. Don't go into IM with a get-rich-quick mindset, it'll never work and you'll give up. You need to work hard, just like anything else.
2. Acting - I can bet that 99% of the time, the reason a noob doesn't make money is because they DONT ACT! You guys act like you have to read the entire BHW forum before acting. You learn by acting. You see that something isn't working, then you improve it. I can go and start making some quick cash RIGHT now if I want. Know how? Think of a topic, something you like. Let's say you like gymnastics. I would go on Google Keywords and research which keywords people are searching for. Then I'd get some cheap hosting and a domain name related to gymnastics. Install Wordpress, and download a theme from here. Now, I start writing or buying some articles about gymnastics, and since I know quite a bit about it, I can easily add information without having to research. I go and open an Amazon affiliates account and serve the products on my WP page, or maybe even some Adsense. I backlink my pages to forums, videos, blogs, etc...There you go, you start getting visits, and maybe make some money. If not, find out why no one is buying, and fix it. It would take about an hour to set up and get going. So, honestly you can start pretty easily.
3. Spend Money - If you are trying to make it in IM without money, you are soooooooooo SOL. Can you do it without money? Sure, but it's damn annoying and time-consuming. You have to be able to afford hosting, domain names, tools, services, content, etc...You can do it all by hand, but you'll never get it done. If you're strapped for cash, read #2's example and try something like that. Maybe it'll make you some decent money, or at least $10-15 to get you started with one full year of hosting and a domain (look for specials).
4. Accept Failure - The greatest entrepreneurs in this world did not succeed right away. They failed...many times in fact, before finally getting it right. You have to regard failure not as actual failure, but an OPPORTUNITY to improve. When something is going wrong, you can research, troubleshoot, and fix it.
5. Focus - Many people end up failing or giving up when they tackle too much at once. You don't need to be trying 20 different methods at once. Give it your full attention until you've got it where you want it, and you will see that your results are that much better. People abandon projects left and right because they don't see cash on the first day...that's dumb.
6. Keep your mouth shut - Once you find your niche, or perfect method. KEEP IT TO YOURSELF. I'm sorry, but this is the way of the world. Just because we're on a forum, doesn't mean that you give everyone the juicy details. What would have happened if businesses started sharing their secrets or that little "special touch" that makes their product so great? Think about that.
7. Knowledge and skills - You cannot survive in IM without a skill, be it coding, graphics, networking, project management, hell even niche skills like twitter account management or fanpages management. The way you lean is by building rep and working with others and you cannot do that without a skill. Whatever you enjoy, study it, practice it. Be the guy that people turn to on Skype when they have a question about your niche skill. (Thanks D4Dirty!)
Now go out there, and make some damn MONEY!
