I have been building an authority site for my niche and I currently have a little over one thousand pages of original high quality content.

My money pages were hit very hard by penguin, but my blog posts which target super long tail keywords rank very high, in most cases #1 or #2 for the keyword they target.

So, I am wondering about internal linking between these blog posts and outbound links. Up to this point, I really don't have many outbound links on my site. The more that I read, the more it seems to be clear that I am not taking advantage of the benefits I could reep if I were to do more internal linking along with outbound links to relevant sites (not necessarily competitors, but I can link to some very relevant sites, just not the exact keywords I target).

Am I missing a big opportunity here to make my internal linking structure along with outbound links work in my favor?

If anyone has experience with this, discuss in this thread your best practices for internal link structures in authority sites along with your best practices for outbound links.

Thanks!...

Internal linking can definitely be a major tool in the toolbox. How to do it I think somewhat depends on the niche and the type of content you're providing. Try taking a look at the "silo" structure if you're not familiar with it. That's a good place to get started.

I have looked at the silo structure and I don't know if it really will provide much benefit to my site, but it could...

Over the next few days I am going to add backlinks to every blog post, internally, outbound links to relevant pages and I am going to add a link to a competitor...

this should be interesting to see the results, can't hurt...

Plan. Implement. Evaluate. Access. Repeat. There's only one way to know for sure and that is to try it out. I would definitely breadcrumb your related posts and your related posts only. Have each post link to the one before and after it, and back to its parent page. In my experience I've had bad luck getting the WordPress category page to rank, so I build Pages for the keyword and then use the catlist plugin to list only related Posts on that Page. This allows me to add my own static keyword filled content on a Page and the Posts will keep that Page active with new content.

I wouldn't OBL on every page, but only a few Posts and to relevant websites as you mentioned. I'm sure somebody has some formula for number of OBL's per page.
