It's link spamming 101. Works well if you know how to do it. If you don't know how to find bad neighborhoods, you end up where youngjeezey or what the hell ever his name is....

For short term SEO, it is highly effective to get hundreds of links in a few days. For long term and gradual SERPs, do it slowly, building authority.

Of course spamming works, and it has been used every since the internet was invented.
All those doorway pages, networks of blogs on same ip's, etc.
If you are going to spam, then make sure that you take 2 things into account:
1)There's a risk of getting your domain banned, so therefore, don't put all of your earnings in one basket
2)Use an aged domain to build tons of backlinks to because it carries more weight
