I installed a simple exit pop up (Opt In) about a week ago on 15 of my landing pages. Action Pop Up is the name of the pop up software im using. Im now starting to see my SERP's decline.

Would using an exit pop up negativly effect my rankings?

Thanks all

I was thinking of installing such a pop up on one my pages which ranks pretty well in SERPS. Now that you reported a drop in rankings. I'll keep an eye on this thread and just wait for the answers :)

Are you sure it's not just "Google dance?" How old are your landing pages?

i think this only google dance as you've said. pop up is js file so i think it is not affected your SERP results./.

or perhaps the bounce rate,
with the new google algorithm update.

I started this thread... here is some more info....

The 15 landing pages I installed the exit pop up on are video sales pages. The sites are about 4 months old. I started using the exit pop up 1 week ago so its a bit early to make a decision about its effects. The traffic to the sites varies and I have been getting 60-70 opt in's a day between the 15 sites. My opt ins almost immediatly dropped to 50/day and Im now seeing a drop in the serps in several of the sites. Some of the sites are page 1 for a few of the targeted keywords/phrases. This was the only change I made to the landing pages so there shouldnt be any other factors.

This is why I asked the question. Does anyone know, has anyone tested, adding an exit pop up and determined if it has an effect on SERP?

Someone on here has had to have tested this. Please do tell!!

If its any consolation, my position 4 site is now at 120 :|

Been like that a week, hoping its the google dance, but either way im using adwords to send traffic to it instead

in adwords I'm pretty sure any kind of popup can lower your quality score even if its 100% beneficial to the user experience. so yeah i wouldn't discount that google can at very least detect your popup. I had a site i was spending about $600/day on in adwords and after adding popups i think it triggered a review cos within 2 days I could never spend more than $20/day (at non ridiculous bids)

There is an algo update currently going on with Google. The only way you are going to be able to separate this popup from that update, is if you simply remove it from all or a few of your sites, and see if your rankings return. If not, then you know you are losing traffic like everyone else in long tail terms. If it comes back, then you know its the popup.

Let us know your results.

I was gonna say this. Google are killing off a lot of sites doing this :(
I dont see why they have to do it tbh

Im not taking any chances so I just removed the exit pop ups and I will now wait to see how my rankings are effected. For those of you interested, I didnt at all see an increase in opt in's when I had the exit pop up opt in form in use. I was getting 60-70 opt in's a day on average between the 15 sites and immediatly after installing the exit pop up opt in I saw a decrease in opt in's to about 40-50 a day.

Again, these were pretty much strait video opt in pages. I "thought" that I would see a 5-10% increase in opt in's using the exit pop up opt in. But I didnt.

FYI - My video opt in pages historically convert about 15-25% of site visiters to opting into my list.

My site went from 11 to 40 and now 50 when I installed this javascript pop up script similar to what OP's said.

I have had clients in the past who experienced drops in serps when they installed certain scripts. I have a client who has an enter sign-up box and he seems to rank well, but I'm unsure how different code-wise that is from an exit pop-up.

I would like to know as well as Im thinking to add exit pop ups to some of my pages. Will have a watch on this thread

Imagine googlebot trying to crawl and it suddenly gets 'wait.. before you go, I have a free gift for you...' Googlebots response is 'omg not one of these again.'

Just kidding... but obviously it's likely something in the code that is getting flag because of how it takes over the users browser. It all depends how it was coded to do that though. Google does keep track of certain types of javascript functions that just should not be executing in a public website.

webmarketingmaster - did your SERPS return after removing the Exit Popups? I'm trying to figure out if my site dropped due to adding exit pop-ups as well.....

G hate popups.

One site got slapped and I asked for a review.
You have to write saying why you think you've been a "naughty boy" so I did.

They accepted my apology (i thoght it was a change in site design)

They said (quote)

"You introduced some commercial elements to the site which we have found adversely affect a visitors experience."

They then had a list of three things.

"Slow caching multimedia"
"Redirects to content at odds with the page description provided"
"Popups or intrusive page elements"

The only one of those that I had on my site was a pop-up

I changed to light boxes that day.

Scritty

thanks for that info. What kind of POPUP did you have? and what content was it poping up? Was it an ExiT popup that was triggered on exit?

Also, how did you ask for a review? was it the reconsideration request via webmaster tools?
