If cruise ships have to carry life jackets and emergency boats in case it starts sinking. Why can't planes carry parachutes so people could possibly escape before it crashes.

If I'm paying so much for a ticket,I'd want a better chance of surviving. Its basically pointless to fly across the Atlantic when a cruise ship has more amenities, better chance of survival if something happens, and you can carry more luggage.

that's because it takes a bunch of training to use a parachute. and if a plane is crashing those are not exactly good jumping conditions.

    you are right angelas....
but you have a chance to survive if you try to use a parachute ...

I'l take a bit of it too.

On a more serious note -

    1) Training requires a lot of work, and skills and most importantly, A LOT of money. Imagine 300 or so people on a plane all frustrated, all rushing around, struggling to put on a parachute?
    2) Parachutes are expensive. You need to have different sizes, for different people.
    3) The majority of crashes happen on landing, takeoff, or very close to the ground, which negates the possibility of a parachute.
    4) Getting 200-300 people to jump out of 2 exits would be a time consuming thing.

It's better to stay in the plane and hope that the pilot does something fast.

Because jumping from an airplane isn't for everybody. Besides, at the speeds commercial airliners travel, most people would die instantly or suffer severe body injury. At those speeds, air behaves like maple syrup. Try filling a pool and then jump from 30 feet high. You'll get the point.

Trust me, I jumped a few times, from perfectly working airplanes, both civilian and military.

:)) a valid point if you just want to argue with airport authorities, but in the real world i doubt you would have the time to use the parachute, even if you knew how to.. But, they could make all the seats in the plane to eject if something goes wrong and each seat to have a parachute attached :D

Having each seat loaded with a parachute and ejector would cost millions. And it would just be a disaster IMO.

But in some situations the plane engine fails at a high enough altitude that an escape is possible.

The titanic sunk because of incompetence. If the telegram operators had been doing their job, they would have gotten the message about ice bergs, and had gone south to prevent hitting them.

If the current planes dont allow for safe exit in case of engine failures at high altitude, then there needs to be a new more modern and safe design. The current layout has been around for 40+ years, without any major changes.

If you jumped out at cruising altitude you would die
If a plane exploded mid air you wouldn't have a chance to chute up
The only way it would work if they knew the plane was going to blow up then reduce altitude to 10,000 feet, go as slow as possible and have exit doors designed for jumping out of, then you also have the fact that few people will know how to use them and the huge added cost of flying 300 chutes on every single flight.

So no, will never work, it's stupid.

average commercial flight has between 200 and 500 passengers - can you imagine what would happen when 200+ people open their parachute at the same time? lol

I know! they could put a giant parachute on the airplane, so if it crashes they can just open the airplane's parachute!

if a plane was crashing opening the doors at that altitude would suck everyone out anyway, parachute isn't gonna do squat you'll probably pass out before you could pull the cord in those conditions

and i don't think the airlines want people littering the earth, at least if they make you stay in the plane all the carnage will be in a confined area

No parachute company will take that task on. Imagine if the parachute of a plane will fail to open or break because of the speed, but still 50 people survive, that will be a hell of a law suit.
Just let them die. That's much simpler. :sgrin:

When I said high altitude, I meant high enough for a safe jump, not cruising altitude.

So, you parachute out of the airplane, land safely in the sea, then drown? Think id rather die on impact!
