Hi,I have been freelance writing for quite a while now - starting off on iWriter where I quickly became an elite writer before moving on to real clients for whom I produce regular content for set prices. I have been constantly praised for the quality of content and style I produce and when I look at what else is out there I can understand why. A lot of it is rehashed rubbish or quickly churned out garnish and that is of course to be expected with the low rates being charged.

What I am wondering is where is the market for people who can write content that is a few notches above the rest that is out there? I am in the final year of a Marketing degree so my hands are pretty full with dedicating the time needed to start my own project but is this probably the best option?

Short of publications , where is the best place to find clients that actually need quality content? I have been lucky to come across a few people on forums etc but I think I have to do my own market research on the area so decided maybe posting up something here would be a bit of a head-start!

Glad to hear that you have such a great focus on the future of your career with recognition of your ability to provide quality Journalism. I think you should try submitting some of your work to actual national publications ( higher pay and better exposure), creating your own company while utilizing your marketing degree to really get your name out there and possibly pitching potential clients from keyword searches ( for local and national clients).

    Create your blanket marketing package

Take advantage of the option many postal services offer by delivering a business card or business post card to a specific zip code ( setting a editorial calendar to distribute to specific zip codes on certain weeks).

Check out a few local / national events, submit your company information to attend and take some time to network. With the collapse of many of the content, social media, general marketing companies this year, there is room for smaller companies to come in and take those accounts.

Check for grants that are applicable in your country. There are quite a few grants that are available to help you secure office space, supplies and employees. These grants are set up to influence the growth of small businesses and create jobs.

Understand your market and hire a right hand person. Consider adding someone with the same passion for your field of expertise to your team as your Virtual Assistant or as a member of your Board of Directors in your company. If they feel that they have some stake in the company they are applicable to handle some of the marketing for you while you craft business plans for potential clients.

If you need more suggestions or info, feel free to pm me. :)

Ah, I'm not being a prick but your thread should read, "What to do when you're actually a good writer?"

    @helpinghand182

You asked, "What to do when your actually a good writer?"

Well . . . one thing I do is that I make sure my spelling is correct.
The short form of "you are" is you're - not your, (as shown in
your title). Not to worry though . . . "To err is human - to forgive
is divine", and I forgive you. :)

    Cheers! - "Wiz"

As an African American writer I must ask if that was necessary. Atleast respect me enough to spell out the full word serious. :) ( Just joking)

Wiz, in your first sentence of helpful criticism you stated:

You asked, "What to do when your actually a good writer?"

Besides "your" being mistakenly spelled, you should have put the question mark "outside" of the parentheses as it signifies the end of the sentence and a sentence cannot end with a parentheses. :)

No. For one parentheses are brackets and not quotation marks. For two putting the ? on the outside would have made it a question, it is not a question, but a quote. A full stop should have been used after the quotation mark, but who really cares.

If you are very good at writing, you should go after the Nobel Prize in Literature. The prize is over 1 million USD :)

I have to question your assumption based on these rules:

The placement of question marks with quotes follows logic. If a question is in quotation marks, the question mark should be placed inside the quotation marks.

    Examples:

She asked, "Will you still be my friend?"

Do you agree with the saying, "All's fair in love and war"?

Here the question is outside the quote.

    NOTE:
Only one ending punctuation mark is used with quotation marks. Also, the stronger punctuation mark wins. Therefore, no period after war is used.

Bottom-line: I strongly believe that all authors should have a good editor.

To the OP: To answer your original question besides writing for others I suggest you create your own blog with a subject that is topical and that you have interest in (it will seem less like work that way) and then use some of the monetizing techniques as described in many of the threads at BHW!

Seriously though, if you want to make a career writing you gotta become a grammar nazi!

To answer your question, maybe you should consider publishing your own books on kindle. I suck at writing but I still make a decent amount of $$$ each month from kindle books alone.

Sorry for the typo in the thread title - I made this thread quickly without proofreading it.As I spend a good chunk of each day proofreading my content , I do try to avoid it as much as possible when I can :)

I find it really funny when I see writers or people in general proclaiming about how grammatically correct they are . That should be an absolute given and is probably the easiest part of putting together any piece! It is a little ironic when a thread about being a good writer features a typo in the title though :)

Thanks for the advice guys! Sorry if I come across a little arrogant but I do feel writing is what I excel at the same way others are better at programming or niche research. I keep seeing everywhere that it is a good skill to have so I really want to make the best of it if at all possible!

As for the Kindle book idea - what does this involve? Would there be a lot of niche research ,advertising etc needed ?

Hey, when I write and type fast it's hysterical the way I makeup like sounding words, that's the nature of creative writing. Here's a good Kindle thread to check out:

    http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/making-money/550442-guys-kindle-ticket.html

Not surprisingly, Grammar Nazis are an occupational hazard so you learn to reread everything as a matter of habit. Even on the Tech blogs everybody gets all over the author if there is a grammatical mistake and use that as an excuse to dismiss their observations. A thick skin if often necessary if you are going to write.

Thanks you for ur kind reply!;)

Ya that happens with me also - the words and the typing flow so fast and you become solely focused on just getting across what you want to say. Proofreading becomes instinctive after a while as there is nothing worse than noticing typos afterwards!

I'll definitely have a look through that thread! Thanks!

.....and the first sentence was meant to be ironic before I get slaughtered! :)

If you do your niche research correctly you don't really need to advertise anything, but of course it will help.

    Grammar police out in force!!
Try Copy writing if your writing skills are as good as you say. Descent money in it, if done well.
