Penguin 2.1— feel like I understand it pretty well (at least how it affected my site)

I?m not going to use my exact keyword, but say it is ?car accident?
And my site was the equivalent of caraccident.com

I was ranking for a variety of key words
    ?car accident?
    ?car accident statistics?
    ?car accident prevention?
    ?safe driving tips?

Note that I had virtually no anchor texts for ?car accident prevention? it merely ranked that highly because of EMD and using the keyword ?car accident?

    This is what happened.

Before penguin 2.1 I was ranking:
    4 for ?car accident?
    2 for ?car accident statistics?
    10 for ?car accident prevention?
    125 for ?safe driving tips?

    After penguin 2.1-
    74 for ?car accident?
    72 for ?car accident statistics?
    75 for ?car accident prevention?
    125 for ?safe driving tips?

So my site as a whole wasn?t penalized becacuse the ?safe driving tips? keyword which I never optimized for, didn?t move.

Only the keyword containing ?car accident? EVEN WHEN I didn?t optimize for the whole tail (in my case ?car accident prevention?). It is clear that just because ?car accident prevention? included ?car accident? it was penalized.

So my idea solution is to build a lot more links, with completely unrelated keywords.
Apparently having 50% or so your links including a certain keyword had that keyword or anything including that keyword penalized. I think 10-20% of your links for your target keyword would be the sweet spot now. 10% to be safe. What your guys? thoughts?

Dude it's too early to make assumptions. You also can't make assumptions on Penguin by evaluating just one website.

Just wait a while things are still fluctuating.

Google performs a fake update during the real update just to confuse SEOs. The real update will be done in 2 to 3 weeks or even longer, don't jump to conclusions before then.

    I disagree

My spam site had insane anchor text distribution mate, I'm talking 75% unoptimized keywords and targeting a huge range of pages on my website and it was hit.

All of the content was original and high quality, so my guess is that they are finally targeting shitty links and penalizing for them.

I'm working on a link removal campaign via linkdelete to test this theory. They helped a previous site of mine. I think Google is finally targeting low quality links based on previous algo updates.

You are right about this. It's seriously not about anchor diversity this time. This Update has affected sites on a broader scale.

I appreciate your post but as some ppl from here said - is too early to make conclusions regarding the effect of this Penguin 2.1 against your website. It was a MASS Penalized without taking in consideration so many factors just to allow to Penguin 2.1 to start his real work. For sure the effects that can be verify will be seen in like 1 month (this is my opinion tho).
I'm sure that many things will change in the way of making the SEO for our websites.

And my idea is to vary everything in the website. Target all possible inner pages, make at least 5-10 backlinks for them one by one. Target all possible images in the website. Most importantly share my website with the url also. And yes now comes my keywords, I shuffle all these things in such a way that I am myself confused. How can google track it when even I can't. :D

Lol, you will get lost at the end...

This update is surely about backlinks but what OP says should also be taken care of. Anyways, lets wait a bit till dust settles.

Thanks OP for your post and sharing your thoughts. I'm also trying to work this out too with my own sites but think its too early to make specific reasons for what's happened. One of my sites has completely disappeared, most of the others have dropped by a few positions, but a couple haven't moved and one has improved. As others have said give it a week or two and then re-evaluate, that's what I'm going to do. Sit tight, wait and don't do anything to your site(s) and see how things pan out.

This has already been the case ever since Penguin 1. So nothing new really, when it comes to anchor diversification.

As far as my analysis go this penguin update targeted those sites which had irrelevant backlinks from irrelevant sites. I'm seeing this in many sites who got tanked while the sites who just build around 30 links which are very relevant are ranking and beating the ones with around 500+ links(Some are irrelevant)

Let me tell you, there was an EMD update too going along with the new Penguin. So that may be the reason why your site tanked for keywords containing in your domain name :)

I agree its very early and need time to let the dust settle before jumping to conclusions, but I have seen something similar to the OP.

On page fell out of the SERPs, which I targeted hard and is a category. Other pages that are related and brands of the category are still in the SERPs but still fell a few pages.

Funny thing is that one of my satellite sites that I use to link to my main site is showing up higher in the SERPs. Almost all the links pointing to this site are highly spun tier 3 links.

I manage a throwaway tier 2 site promoted with tens of xrumer blasts, the worst possible links ever, simply link spam...and to my surprise it's now page 1.... I just love this business.

I was playing on my iPhone and found my site's page ranking for the KY that I mention above ranking at 25. I went to my desktop and found that I am not there, though my 2nd Tier site is and as well as another page with similar KY relevance. The difference between mobile search and my desktop really started on the 3rd page of the SERPs.

Very interesting. My 2nd Tier site has links from UD and spun content from Kontent Machine. Almost make me think about starting to use that content for 1st tier and just have a shit load of diverse high and low PR properties linking to my site. But then again, I will have to sit on this for a bit and see what the ranking look like at the end of the week.

I got my weekly rankings update from Market Samurai today and, while there is always a slight discrepancy in the results, I was surprised to see that the main keyword that I was talking about above and completely fell out of the SERPs is now back in about the same spot.

Funny thing about the SERPs today for me is that many of the pages that have lost ground are the ones that I didn't build links for and were ranking completely organically.

I was starting to buy into the premise that this update targeted Web 2.0 backlinks because I had been working on a campaign surrounding the KY that re-appeared today and used my private Web 2.0 network heavily for that campaign. But with today's rankings, I can't say that at all.

One observation that I just made is that many of the pages that tanked had a number of 301 redirects pointing to them. After being slapped by the original Penguin, I moved my site to a subdomain and redirected the entire thing. I also changed the structure of my permalinks which also called for redirects. Since the move, I haven't really built any links directly to those pages but instead focused on some other pages because I was happy with the rankings.

Another page that ranked #1 for a KY that I did absolutely no backlinking is another redirect. I redirected this page because I made a new review for the product and the old introduction was completely outdated and also written before I understood SEO. I rewrote the entire review and titled it with the KY's in it as well as the url.

Again, just an observation. I know most people didn't do the redirecting that I did previously and still were slapped.

Things that make you go hmmmm......

It has now been a few days. The results I initially reported stock and if anything got worse just let you guys know.
I don't believe this update is going anywhere that my site is magically going to go back to the second place ranking. this was a penguin update and I strongly believe my report is accurate, so hopefully helps you guys out

Try checking which pages ranked for which keywords before and after the update. It might have been a specific page that was hit, not the whole site
