Check this out, definitely interesting outcome.
    http://www.linkresearchtools.com/case-studies/google-penguin-3-update

If you want, I can post the PDFs here, so that you don't have to tweet/like to get the content.

Others who don't want to read everything themselve, here are my notes & a summary of the most important points:

    - Winners have a Power*Trust of 5 to 7. This can be compared to for example in Majestic SEO data Citiation&Trust of ~50-70 average, combined.

    - Footer links aren't harming, if the whole backlinking profile is clean

    - Link velocy is highly important! Looser sites have a downgoing link growth, while big sites have an steady link growth!

    - Alexa of the winners is 2,7 to 2.2 Million

    - Winners have an average of ~300 new linking root domains each month

    - Winners have an average of 970.000 indexed sites, while at least 1.000+ indexed pages

    - Domain Pop of linking domains of the winners is mostly with a Popularity of 100-1000+, and the winners have more 1.000-10.000+ links

    - The linking domains of the winners have lot's of more links with keyword rankings of 3.500 to 15.000

These are just newest movements. You have to merge this information with the recent updates.

Hope I could help some people.

    Regards,
    Albaniax

They used a sample set of 100 websites, 50 winners and 50 losers, which imho is a very small dataset for any solid conclusions. Some of the data points are very frankly, stupid. Such as domain age where winners and losers both have ~10 years old domains, no. of indexed pages(if it was a ratio to the total no. of pages on a website, it would've been trustworthy), no. of ranking keywords etc.

Anyway, I uploaded the files here for those who want to take a look at it:

Is there a similar summary available for what the losers had in common?

I'm sure someone could do a better analysis than that if they offered the data set up as well

I found the anchor text distribution interesting. I did not expect the losers to have a high number of branded anchor text links. If anything I though this would be the opposite.

As someone who hasn't suffered from the google animals I'll add that I fit pretty neatly inside the above parameters

I guess these are the people, who read after the last updates, that they have used to many exact-match keywords. Now of course, as dumb people do, they overdo now the other site :)

Still I think it's more because of the other parameters, as of no quality site + backlinks, that they are some of the loosers.

    @partymarty - in a good way or a bad way ?

Here's also the infographic about this topic:

This guy just made a further Guest Post about the topic on searchengineland

His backlink checker LinkResearchTools is amazing, but cost's 300? a month for the best subscription, which includes 22 Backlink Sources. I got it one time for one month, and exported 200 Link Reports for my main competition. I'm still finding new links to post on from these sources :)
