Well, not my type to write threads to complain but just thought I would share and see if it helps me deal with the disappointment I am dealing with.

I have a production company (just started it so we could apply for grants) We submit two short film projects to the cultural development department at our government. They give out 75k$ grants to projects and obviously not everyone gets in (probably 1 out of 3).

It is really disappointing because we worked so hard on the BRICK of paper work we had to do (for both movies). We ended up finalizing everything on the final day of submissions.

We pay 100$ per submission (which I have no issue with as it helps get rid of the parasites that are just trying to get free money and don't care about cinema at all. Then I had an issue with the branch at my bank, they fucked up my account and could not process checks anymore, so I managed to call up the agency and caught them less than 24 h before the checks were gonna be deposited, so I told them about the issue and found another way to pay the money before they go and deposit the funds. Thus, avoiding being denied for non payment.

Waited a few months and today got both letters in about our results, stating we have been denied. I now have to wait til December 10th to find out what was the reason we got denied.

It sucks because we had a web television network interested in our projects, and other possible TV networks possibly purchasing the shorts...

We obviously will not quit as this is what we live for and try to also live off of. We simply just don't have the funds to get such ambitious projects rolling.

While waiting have been planning more projects also, so it is not like we wasted our time doing nothing sitting on our hands waiting to be handed money...However, after being denied a second time, I feel that it is almost a waste of time to try and get money from the government and would have to find alternatives to that...

Yeah, try out Kickstarter. I've seen many projects be funded entirely from Kickstarter.

Yeah I have tried Kickstarter or its alternative, available to Canadians, and ended up not having much results. Due to the fact we could not push enough traffic to the actual thing.

I have been thinking about it however. As a plan to go near metro doors and hand out flyers, to get the word out and such, and possibly reach out to local fellow film makers to give us a hand to get the word out.

I am glad however to have successfully managed to get through the brick of paper work, and have learned a great deal out of this whole experience. Seeing the positive in this definitely is helping.
