Back in the day I used to play games like diablo 2 and lineage 1 (around 1995-2000). Anyone out there used to play?

At first I played legit and I kicked ass since I played all the time. One day I was playing at an internet cafe and I was showing another dude some of my cool items. He said, "hey I'll give you $10 for that sword." I thought about it and decided to sell the item. Made $10 and for a 14 year old that was real money. I played more and more, always selling shit to other players at internet cafes. I even had suppliers who I was buying from and then mark up the item and sell for a profit. Made like 2k doing this. For a 14 year old I was a fucken badass since all my other friends were broke. I was like a crack dealer for game items.

Then I decided to do the same in lineage. However, for lineage I started to sell my gold on ebay (back then ebay didn't care). Made a couple thousand more over the course of a couple years.

Then everything went down from there. Ebay blocked virtual game items and many 3rd party gold selling websites showed up. These guys took item selling to new levels. Writing advanced bot programs, employing Chinese sweat shop labor to run the operation etc. The price of items dropped dramatically.

So now the only way to make some decent money was to find a dupe hack or gold bug to get a crap load of items/gold and just sell all that shit as fast as possible. To say the least I don't sell game items anymore nor do I play mmorpgs anymore. But I still think back to those days.

These days however, mmorpgs are mainstream in the US especially with 10 million+ wow players and god knows how many more playing the free-to-play games like runescape and maplestory. Even if only each player spends 10$ per year on game items that comes out to $100 million. I know some are spending nothing while others are spending alot more.

Anyone out there making money in mmorpgs?

Seems like these days the real money is in making/owning the actual mmorpgs because at the end of the day they're the ones who have the power to make unlimited items/gold and sell it for money.

Bots (autohealers, attackers etc.) can be lucrative because they need to be exclusive to remain undetectable. Warden and clones look for suspect footprints in processes but they will not find something they don't know the footprint of. Like a virus needs to be known to the scanner in order to be identified. The downside is you can't sell the bot to many clients for the above reason.

A friend does it the hard way. Playing all day. Good thing is he hires some kids to play for him.

Rich kids and adults too, pays him (in his shop) to powerlevel their character for like $600 up per character.
Cost him less than $300 to pay a bunch of kids to lvl a number of accounts.
He says he seldom uses bots of fearing being banned from the game.

Yea you could do that but I was thinking more of in-game services, item selling etc.

haha yup, I learned the hard way about those pesky anti-hack softwares. Nprotect especially.

Companies are a lot more aggressive now using dmca to shut sellers of the items down. If you are offshore in a place that does not care about dmca you can still promote it but it is much more competitive now.

I did this at one point with a very popular online game and made a bunch of money at it but got ran over eventually by the offshore groups with their programmers & other cheap resources. Lots of others jumped in and it became a race to the bottom on prices then and wasn't worth my time anymore.

If I would even consider it again, it'd really be better to get involved with a game community or clan where you can sell by word of mouth. You just can't promote freely like you used to.

I used to do a method dealing with Maplestory and bots. Made some good money but at that time I didn't know how to scale it cause it would have required maybe multiple VPS. I have a friend who does it now still and makes 300 a month, not much but scaled could be grand.

Well just before I stopped playing a new 'industry' was emerging - contract killing of characters. In my game it was pretty easy to kill any high lvl player with 50 or so low levels attacking at the same time. It was a big issue because a death resulted in 10% loss of experience points, which meant you could also lose a level. There were many revengeful but otherwise powerless players. And it took a long time to ban a posse so they could execute 10, 20 contracts quickly before disabled.

I have a few "gold farming" accounts.. $0.80-$1.00 per million coins. Totally botted - but hell, it's been good money for me. Between 4 accounts I average about $15 a day selling to members of various forums. If one of the accounts happens to get banned, I just start up a new one.

Some people seem to sell game accounts pretty regulary on ebay. Not sure how the rules of that work as they seem to sell the account with a free item.

I did look into making money with entropia universe but that looked like slave labour if you are just starting out now hehe.

I would say that the people making the most money in the MMORPG market (other than their creators, of course) would be the people selling cheats. As long as you can police it so that random players can't join your "cheat club", you have a good chance of it staying exclusive and undetected. The lower profile cheats you run (i.e., things that "assist" you, not things that are extremely obvious), the easier it is to maintain. A great example of a successful cheat system is the HIV Valve hacks. If you want to see the business model in action, check them out. It's not neccecarily a MMORPG, but it can be applied.

I've been highly interested in this for a-while, I've been wanting to find someone to JV with that has more experience with mmo botting/money making, to start botting on a massive level.
I've heard some of the runescape gold sites pull in over $1000 a day.

Does anybody know where to hire people cheap to goldfarm for a flat rate? I am currently farming in a game and selling the gold all manually making $1600-$2000 per month but i want to outsource it. Also does anybody know how much i'd need to pay per hour?
