Sorry if this is duplicate content but what are peoples thoughts on white hat SEO for local search results? Any ideas or tips that differ from standard SEO practices? This would be for a local business. Biggest competitors don't have many backlinks.

    Donohuge,

For the most part you would do things the same as SEO on a larger scale however you would want to target keyword phrases that people are using to look for local businesses. For instance a lot of searchers use a keyword related to the business plus a city or state name. You could also try some semantic markup strategies,

    Hope that helps,

If I'm going to get the KWs below: anchortext+city/town...where you want to target your sites. Certainly the content is relevant to niche. Also site plays an important role. It will be xxx.de if your site is the german one as an example!

For local business the seo strategies would again be same.... only the keyword competition would be less as compared to global...

Be careful taking advice for Local SEO by guys that do organic SEO. It's a completely different beast.

    Case Study:

Small business hires big-shot SEO to promote his business. Get's ranked #1 in organic listings, and is completely non-existent in Local Search results. Wildly inconsistent NAP.

One day, Panda update Zaps about 900 of his 950 backlinks, and he goes from #1 to page 5 in two days. Phone stops ringing right at the start of the busy season. Owner freaks out.

I call the guy. I say, "Hey, you don't have Google Places filled out, you have 3 different addresses, two different phone numbers, 3 variations on your business name and almost none of the Local Citations are filled out." He says, "All of that is wrong. I've been paying an SEO to do "All that stuff" for 2 years."

Really? I say. Did Mr. Big-shot ever tell you about how critically important NAP consistency is?
He says, "What's NAP?" (He thinks it's about taking regular rests while doing SEO.)

He's still on page 3. He fell back under the spell of Mr. Big-shot. They know how to use the words that sound "just right" and poor schmucks would rather believe the incompetent liar they can understand than the qualified expert that tells them things they've never once read on Warrior Forum.

This doesn't mean that organic SEO's don't know anything, nor does it mean that cannot help (somewhat) a Local Business. What it means is that they do luxuries before necessities, and sacrifice long-term benefit for short term gain. Most really don't understand the difference between Local and Organic SEO, and some of them don't think there is any. There is. Find someone that can explain the difference between the two, and why the organic optimization methods are less optimal that local optimization methods.

I defiantly agree local and nationwide seo is different. Being indexed number one on organic will get you less customers than number 1 in local listings. The local listings will have a phone number attached to will allow customers to instantly pick up the phone. Some customers don't even visit the websites, just call.

Local seo? organic seo. they are about the same as men and women. Sure you can use organic seo to get the site ranked high in organic results but what help is that if a 7 pack of local listings is higher on the page?
