Im trying to build some links to my website which is about a year old. I haven't done any link building, just starting now but according to my research on SEO, Google seems to penalize the below methods

    Forum signatures
    blog commenting
    social book marking
    article submissions
    directory submission
    guest blogging

if those are not allowed what is the other white hat ways to build links?

i also found Google penalizes if you use aggressive anchor texts or keywords in links. In this case my niche is about hair extensions so its not a good idea to add keywords like "hair extensions, buy hair extensions, buy hair extensions uk, hair extensions uk" if i cant add these keywords to the anchor, what kind of text can i add

i have around 25 keywords but none of these are ranking within the 35 pages of google. I just need to bet them to at least within the 20 pages.

Any useful guides will be highly appreciated

You can still rank the site with your mentioned methods. But don't mass link building or spamming otherwise you'll be banned.
The only thing is matter is that Quality links, it doesn't matter if its forum, blog comments , social bookmarks, Guest blogs or any other platform. Just make links on quality sites and always try to target theme/niche relevant links.

All the methods you mentioned do work, but as long as its QUALITY. For example, leaving a blog comment on a relevant, high quality website is great for ranking and traffic. So its not the method, but how you use it that's much more important these days. Local directories are a great way to start your link building strategy :)

Not only will relevant comments and articles give you back-links, you will also get targeted visitors. Eventually, these sites will rank for something too, and you will get a steady flow of visitors coming from that link.

Yea, just go easy with the link building. Build a few per day, consistantly. If you build 1,000 per day, it looks completely unnatural to Google and triggers slaps.

    Good luck

You have to be smart with your link building

I am surprised you mention guest blogging alongside article submissions.

The only thing in common these 2 things have is that you'll have to write an article. Quality wise, they are both very different.

All the methods you can imagine work unless you don't do it in large amount, single way and on low trust domains.

Its not that complicated, you are allowed to promote your site but not try to game the system. If you are participating in your niche online, you are promoting your site.

Article directories are not toxic,(as long as the article is quality and relevant, and the site is a quality site) But 1000 links from them is.

Each of the things you cited are OK to use to promote your site, but not to spam with.

You just have to figure out where that line is.

Let me just post here to tell you how awesome press releases are for a whitehat site.

As some of you know, I am working on an adsense site. 1 press release and 5 minutes later, that press release is on the first page of a 100k+ search term. So good!

These techniques ARE allowed (otherwise none of us had a signature here :)). But you must be maximally careful when using them.

For example, if you want to leave a blog comment with a link to your site, make sure that your comment is maximally informative and addresses the questions raised in the discussion. Also, your link must be relevant to the topic being discussed.

As for social bookmarking sites (e.g. Reddit, StumbleUpon and the like), you need to comply with all the community rules. If you spam with low-quality submissions, all your efforts to promote your site in these communities will be in vain. You will just get banned there.

And what concerns submitting a website to directories, you should check them first and avoid getting your site listed in low-quality and spammy ones. Authoritative, high-quality directories are still good to submit a site to.

If you are trying to make your anchors look more natural, make sure that you maximally diversify them and use different variations of targeted keywords.

As anchor text you may use:

    - Brand name/Brand-keyword hybrid (e.g. Mortgage calculator Zillow)
    - Exact match/Partial and broad match (e.g."mortgage calculator")
    - Non-descriptive (click here, read more, download here, etc.)
    - Naked URLs (www. example.com, example.com, Example.com, EXAMPLE.COM, http:// www. example.com.)

P.S. You can find more info on the current industry trends in our new SEO guide. Check it out.

I am not using adwords at all. Wrote a decent press release, put it through my wire, and 5 minutes later its in google news and yahoo news and the press release is sitting number 3 for a 100K search term.

I was not a believer in press releases before this as I have ordered many from BHW through different wires. These are a bit low quality, so just need a good one which costs money.

If you really want to go whitehat, then you can do this:

1.get involved in the community - post on forums, message boards, etc. Reference your site when appropriate.
2.get involved on social media, as above.
3.guest post on sites in your niche.
4.keep putting cutting edge content on your site, and hope people link to it.

    That's 100% whitehat.
blackhat is imitating the above on a massive scale with automation software, and greyhat is everything else in between.

Produce amazing content on your website which people will be dying to share and link to.

Sounds simple right? No? Ah yes, it doesn't.

But if I had to sum up white hat SEO into one sentence It'd be that.

The line between black and white hat really isn't that clear-cut. If you're thinking about SEO at all, a purist might suggest you are not all that white...!

Anyway, non-spammed sites work just fine, it's mainly down to onsite optimisation so that all your juicy sharable content gets spotted.

RE: anchor text, you need to have variations on the keyword, not just adding more words to it. So instead of "hair extensions", go for "get long hair now", "hair extender guide", "hairpiece tips". You can think of ideas yourself or use something like keywordshitter. Just plain urls and random words also work great.

Just make sure your posting links to quality sites. If you post to mass spammy blog networks and crappy sites you're going to get slapped

They do not penalize for those methods they just penalize your site depending on what site you use those
    methods with and link too.
