I was wondering how an amature can analyze the potential of a completely new domain which he got registered? Surely the guy is new and the domain he purchased is new too. So How the potential of the domain can be checked?

    Regards

The domain only has as much potential as the person using it.

You could post it here and we'll all tell you it's crap and ask you what you were thinking.

You could post it at any other domaining forum to have the same berating.

Or you could try to flip it by posting it to the big sites and contacting interested parties via email. Then you'll know exactly what it's worth. It's worth whatever you sell it for.

(This is all assuming you got it for domaining and not development, assumed because we're in the domaining subforum.)

A little tricky reply. Lets say if i got a call from buyer for abcd (which never existed) quoting me $1000 how can i figure this is the real potential of it?

Yes it is depend on the person using it, The domain does not have any potential untill you know that how to use any domain, the potential is made in the website, not it in the domain my friend, See the examples of amazon, google and yahoo, black hat world, they are not keywords enriched domain but still they are the best in their field.

But yes, it is good to have a domain that show the light of your business like if you are starting any apparel based online business you must have a domain that reflect that you are a online apparel retailer.

    Tks

If this is your first domain you'd do well to take the $1000.

As I said above, there are two ways to find out: 1) ask the "experts" and 2) find a buyer. If the experts tell you that it's worth more than $1000 then you might consider holding onto it. The experts notoriously call everything crap (because most domains are crap) so they'll probably tell you to sell.

You can briefly analyse it using the basics i.e. .com is worth more then .net and .org. The shorter the name the better. Is it likely to get type-in traffic? Is it a keyword relevant to a particular niche? Is it a selling keyword in that niche?

If it's a typical brandable domain name that has no site it is most likely worth you taking the $1000. Most people that have domain names that think they are worth $1000 actually have domain names that are worth $9. Without knowing the name the odds are $1000 is a good price unless you happened to grab a rare one which is rare in itself these days.

Yes, I sell a few through SEDO and a few more through my own site. My domaining income is meager, still in the low $xxx range monthly, and I've been doing IM for three years so I'm not exactly a newb. Domaining is hard and like anything else you read about, it's best if you apply your own twists to the method.

If you want to PM me your domain I'd be happy to explain why I think it's crap. :p

If i am not wrong, these days going for niche is a better option? Because even if it doesnt give a lot of money it will still give regular incoe by getting sold. Am i right?

I can PM you to learn more but i havent purchased any domains yet. I am a newcomer and wil not start investing untill i am sure i have read atleast enough which can save me from getting fooled by others :). What about landing pages? How do SEDO pays? I mean Cost per click? And how they figure out the rate to be given to owners of landing pages? Do they use the Google adword to figure it out or they have their own calculations?
