IRC is a bit dated, a silc is a better choice.

Why is 'silc' better? I'm pretty sure IRC is still massive and will remain big with enthusiasts.

I use IRC to run my twitter bot, so basically I open a private room, and post to Twitter via IRC, and since IRC is easy to write scripts, it makes for a great twitter auto posting bot :)

Why wouldn't it be? It takes quite a lot to kill off a protocol as popular as IRC...

Right, because it has "secure" in the name, it must be better than the other that does not :D

You do realize that irc supports SSL since ages right? Doesn't get more secure than that.
