The day every SEO has feared has finally arrived. Google has successfully pushed organic search results below the fold for certain popular queries, leaving only paid ads and Google's own properties. How should SEO's respond to this?

Is it really the end of SEO?

The article is about the eCommerce area - not about the SEO itself - and yes Google is protecting his own interest in this field. How can you blame a shoes producer for promoting his own shoes ? If Google is having his own eCommerce Hotel - how do you think that he'll promote an out source :)

Folks should note what G are doing for knowledge only as to what is going on...

Keeping on working on your websites is much more important than wasting time on what losers like G get up to...

Well google is a private company and they will do what's best for them. I personally feel that they are doing it good to the visitors like for eg if you search for terms like

"How to get rid of acne" - You will find the best deals from all ecommerce sites in your country. which is pretty good as a surfer..

Even try out other search terms like "best car speakers" or "buy whey protien" etc.

They have even started to quote articles in the search for cure terms like "how to get rid of stretch marks"..(google it).

But you cant say SEO is dead..people still click on those Blue links from 1 to 10 no matter what google does on the top section of their search.

Adjustments may have to be made, and ultimately, if Google delivers bad results as a consequence of the push for profits, then it'll be Bing's turn! SEOs will then focus on Bing or whatever other SE is going to be the surfers' favorite.

I don't like reading posts about Google being unfair, it's their free business decision, they are not violating laws or breaking agreements. As we know, it could bring them down sooner or later, the success of Google was also built on their non-profit concept, the more they drift away, the more opportunities for other non-profit ventures. They should do what they want, at their own risk, this is America, not China, at least for now!

Google's act is going against Google's policy and ethics to give user best search result and all those animal updates to prevent spam and blackhat link building. What ever they speak for they are actually a giant business organization doing monopoly business on net.

SEO isn't dead. Whether these new updates negatively effect user experience is debatable and whether Google can maintain an effective monopoly over SEO is questionable. What people don't realize is that the goal posts are constantly moving, back in the day guys were probably getting all uppity when Google stopped people ranking when they had a perfect keyword density. The game changes, the best players will always be in the premier league.

    Nope.
It is not just ecommerce. There are many other searches where google is doing this.

Do a simple search for attraction in "your city name". Example, do a search for New York City Attractions.
Are you seeing those images on top?

Now the worst thing is, google is stealing the content from other websites(images) to increase their credibility.
If you look at the above search result page, you could probably see the image of Statue of Liberty. This image doesn't belong to google. Not even public domain. It is pulled from google images.

Now, Click on the image. It will take you to another google page where they show the results for the search term statue of liberty. The site which provided the image to google is nowhere listed in the first page.

On the right side, google generates a summary of "statue of liberty" including the first image. Normal users wouldn't bother to click on the image again. Even if you click on the image listed on right, google opens it in another window above the actual web page featuring the image.

In short google is stealing images from other websites without even giving them proper credit. And display the image in such way that the above fold is filled with adwords and useful content is pushed way down.

Imagine we doing this on our site... Google is an effing hypocrite. :buttkick:

SEO is not dead but they keep slowly squeezing organic out of the picture, not sure how far the public will put up with it. They have gotten too big that's for sure, and gotten away from the don't be evil mindset, now it's about squeezing pennies and the bottom line. There is a difference between being a business and being a monopoly that owns a majority of an industry, there is a reasons there are laws against that. But when you have lobbyists and own most of the politicians, things work a little different for you.

Never Dead, just a greater importance (as usual) placed on diversifying your traffic sources and raising the quality of your website.

Imagine you walk into a shop looking for information before making a purchase.
The shop ONLY shows you one brand.
Eventually you go to another shop.

Google understands this - if you want to try and rank for VERY commercial short tail terms - Google is monopolizing those.
But as soon as people see Google has turned from "Search Engine" to "Massive advertisement for itself" they will just go to their internet options and change their default SE to something else.

I mean once a search engine fails to search for anything other than itself - it's not a search engine anymore, you're just choosing to see the adverts a privately owned corporation wants to show you.

Do you have an "emotional involvement" in using Google?
No? - neither does anyone else.

Google are walking a tightrope. They are THE brand name and have been for 13 years. Before that no-one thought Yahoo could lose...or IBM would ever lose the PC market, or Hoover would not be the leading vacuum cleaner manufacturer or Ford would be such a crap car manufacturer ... Free markets don't like massive unbalanced weights in them for long - they always get corrected eventually.

Google is showing too much hubris "do what we like" attitude, but no one (well maybe 0.0001% of their users) gives a fuck about them. If another company did a better job - and Google just presented you with pages of their own ads? People would move quick, and Google would be right roytally fucked

Key thing here is No-one has ANY emotional involvement with them. No one would care if they went tomorrow. Couple that with providing a less than satisfactory service to your key customers who only use you out of habit - when there are better alternatives they could switch to in 20 seconds... That's a precarious place for Google to be.
