FBI Arrest Ugnazi Hacker Kingpin Mir Islam

Six people have been arrested in Britain as part of an FBI-led sting targeting 24 online financial fraudsters involved in the illegal trade of stolen bank and credit card information, and in selling viruses to take over users' computers.

A total of 24 suspects were held across four continents on Tuesday, following an undercover operation begun in June 2010 and described as the biggest of its kind to be launched against financial cybercriminals.

The FBI said that the sting, which used a honeypot website to attract "carders" who exchange stolen credit card details, had protected more than 400,000 potential victims and prevented losses of $205m (£131m) from debit and credit cards.

The money some of these gangs make is unbelievable!

Yup... these dudes make a LOT of money. However, wealth on the competitive field generally doesn't last too long. Creative wealth lasts.

The media and FBI always over estimates the losses that were prevented. Usually what they do is take every single card that was in their database and multiply it by $500. So say some hacker hacks a website and gets 10,000 "credit card information sets" or whatever it is they call them, the FBI will claim that the hacker was responsible for $5,000,000 in losses.

In reality, these scammers rarely make the money that the media portrays. The few hackers at the top probably make a ton, but everyone else likely makes peanuts.

It doesn't matter what else the FBI does. Eric Holder sold assault weapons to the mexican drug cartels, and isn't sitting in prison. Kind of undermines the FBI's credibility. Hoover had files on all his political enemies. Holder's information must be pretty good, to keep him out of prison, not even being charge, or even talked about in the mainstream media very much. I'm more worried about the FBI than I am the credit card thieves.
