I have a main corporate domain where I host a classifieds website (e.g. classifieds.com). I have built a separate website on a subdomain where I built a blog in order to do content marketing and generate traffic (e.g. blog.classifieds.com). Main domain and subdomain have two different Wordpress instances, so two different installs.

The thing is, if I concentrate on generate traffic for blog.classifieds.com, would my main domain classifieds.com get a better Google ranking and overall SEO benefits?

Thanks guys in advance for your brain

Yes. Your theory is completely correct.

The opposite is also true. If you were doing some fishy shit on the subdomain, your main domain would suffer.

A long time ago Google confirmed that domain and sub-domains are not linked together, so even if your sub-domain got deindexed, it will have no effect to your main domain.
The same is correct for the traffic you get to your blog, it doesn't effect your main site in terms of SEO.
Above statement is correct if sub-domain have no links to main domain.
If there are links pointing to main domain, regular rules apply. That means you'll get additional traffic and link juice from your blog.

I agree with you ! i do have a site with like 4 subdomains and when i build backlinks to the sub domain ... the sub domain ranks instead of the main domain so this makes sense that ... sub domain are treated different and using quality SEO strategy you can rank your subdomain too

    +1 He said everything!
Domain and sub-domain are considered different by Google
but if they are connected with links, your main domain will receive juice from blog.domain

    Mmm, that's bad news then.

My blog contains links Indeed, but my aim is to grow my main classifieds website actually.

It would depend on where the traffic would come from. If there traffic would come from Google, it would most likely require some link building on your part, and that indeed would have an effect on the main domain as well.

The main domain has no effect even if you get more traffic on sub domains...
