I really want to get myself a .com.au domain name for a new project. The problem is I need a Australian business number or company number to do it.

Is there any way around this? I am not an Australian and I dont live there.

Ask an Aussie friend to register it and then transfer the domain to you.

What if I don't have a friend over there?

Then you are pretty much buggered. Why don't you order a .com or .net?

Many registrars will offer a "Trustee" service where they will use their information to meet the requirements for you. Hexonet, 101Domain, and EuroDNS all offer this service.. You'll have to see if it's available for AU domains.
