a) Black hat SEO: Too many keywords are used in order to be picked up quickly by search engine.
b) White hat SEO: Keywords and phrases are totally researched

2) Content:
a) Black hat SEO: Content is hidden.
b) White hat SEO: Fresh and quality content

3) Links:
a) Link Framing
b) Quality back links

So I would like to say for search engine marketing white hat SEO is the best option.

In my opinion, both blackhat SEO and whitehat SEO is the best in one area that comes with your time period. If you want to improve your rankings in short time means you may go for blackhat SEO but your ranking is not for long time. It's down to after some days.

But whitehat SEO is one of the best when compared to blackhat SEO but it takes long-time to ranking your keywords if you get one time ranking for your keywords it will stable for long-life on search engines.

So my conclusion is; when you can select your SEO, please consider the 2 following factors!

1. Time limit
2. Product or Service Trend

I think you want to mix best of both worlds - most of automated tools, if used properly (and are considered as BH) can still produce very good results when used in WH techniques - for example, content syndication - if you have fantastic article, it is very easy to syndicate it across the multiple sites using so called "black hat" tools.

Same goes the other way around - there are loads of methods you implement with ease from WH techniques into BH just to improve quality of your links.

Ideally, you would want best of both worlds.
