What is the difference between Windows and linux based VPS's?

Nothing really, except you can't host IIS (ASP, ASP.net) on Non-Windows computers (apache discontinued support).
 
One VPS runs windows, one runs linux.

You can find more free opensource software for linsux than windoze.
windoze is crap, to administrate it you have to login with fucking remote desktop and click around like a monkey.

i avoid windows like the plague, linsux all the way!
 
Depends on what you require and are trying to perform. Some things are better suited for Windows and some are better on Linux. Additionally, you need to be comfortable with the operating system you are administrating.
 
before you pay for a linux vps, learn a little bit about the OS itself, at least pick up a shell account first, that way when you start , you don't waste the first week learning the CLI instead of using it. For a shell account try rootshell.be , or google linux livecd and try it out on your own computer.
 
Am i able to set up different user accounts with A VPS like i can do with Hostgator reseller accounts? Basically I want my 1 main website to be on a different account then the rest of my websites on the VPS.
 
Yeah, you can do pretty much whatever you want on a VPS because it's a virtual private server, which includes setting up multiple user accounts.

However, this would probably only be useful if you have different people maintaining your different sites because it offers no protection if you do naughty things; your hosting provider will warn you / shut your entire server down, so be careful.

The thing is I want to keep my replica ecommerce website separate from the west. how should I do this?
 
If it's just a simple site get shared hosting.. Why waste time messing wiht a VPS if you don't understand configuration of linsux shit.
 
linux seems to be more stable thean windows based server

Depends on how small your ecommerce site is. If its not that large I would put it on a secure reliable shared hosting account that has high uptime and get a vps just to mess around with the other sites.

I'm not sure if it get set up manually by the admin but once its set up it should have cpanel or whatever panel they offer and should be online and accessible through the ip.

Depends on who you sign up with - there are as many options and configerations as their are service providers
 
Windows will ruin you life and linux will make you prosper.
 
It sounds like you need a managed VPS where your service provider takes care of server administration. This would also allow you to have someone hold your hand while you learn how to manage a Linux box.
 
does 256 mb of ram sucks with a vps?
 
Nah, 256MB is usually more than enough, especially if you're running Linux with PHP/MySQL instead of Windoze with ASP/MSSQL.

I'm also assuming you don't do any crazy programming languages like Ruby (Rails) or Python (Django), etc.
